Which Wifi Router

Just signed up for Virgin broadband.  I got the 100mb service.  I have the superhub 3.0

I'm not that impressed with the wireless performance of the Hub.  I have an older house with brick internal walls and the wireless speed drops off quite quickly the further away from the route a device gets.

The features of the firmware are also quite limited.

I understand that the router can be switched to modem mode and a 3rd party router can be used.

What do people recommend for a good wireless performing router with extended range as well as a feature rich firmware.

Many thanks

Re: Which Wifi Router

Thanks very much.

Whats the wireless performance at long distances through the house?

Does the software have a lot of features

And lastly, can it be connected durectly to the Virgin coax or do I have to plug it into the Virgin hub?

Heres a great review...

I used to have to use a TP-Link AC750 Range extender with my sh2ac to get 50Mbps in my bedroom , but I can get 95Mbps without the TP-Link AC750 Range extender just with the Asus Router.

Oh and it has 8 Gigabit LAN ports on it that are perfect for my situation.

You need to conect it to the VM device (in modem mode)

I have put different firmware on (Asuswrt-Merlin) , screenshots are here .... https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/screenshots

Asuswrt-Merlin
==============

About
-----
Asuswrt is the name of the common firmware Asus has developed
for their various router models. Originally forked from
Tomato, it has since grown into a very different product, removing
some more technical features that were part of Tomato, but
also adding a lot of new original features.

Asuswrt-merlin is a customized version of Asus's firmware. The goal is
to provide bugfixes and minor enhancements to Asus's firmware, with also
a few occasional feature additions. This is done while retaining
the look and feel of the original firmware, and also ensuring that
the two code bases remain close enough so it will remain possible
to keep up with any new features brought by Asus in the original firmware.

This project's goal is NOT to develop yet another firmware filled with
many features that are rarely used by home users - that is already covered
by other excellent projects such as Tomato or DD-WRT.

This more conservative approach will also help ensuring the highest
level of stability possible. Priority is given to stability over
performance, and performance over features.

Re: Which Wifi Router

other possible option would be using a pair of wireless homeplugs such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/WiFi-Boosters/TL-WPA4220KIT-V1-20-Powerline-Extender-Configuration-Smartp... so uses internal electricity cables to send the broadband around the house, the speeds can vary depending on how good power cables are, if on same loop etc.. these are useful for rather thick walls, and being on different floors from the router/hub.

Re: Which Wifi Router

Thanks for the review.  Looks like a great bit of kit.  I'm very tempted.

When connecting this (or any third party) router to the virgin router what do I need to do?

I know that I put the Virgin router in modem mode.  What then.  Which ports at the back do I connect from and too?

Many thanks

Re: Which Wifi Router

when using modem mode the only port active is the port closest to the coax (white) cable, as for what you need is a standard Ethernet cable and 3rd party router, guide for enabling modem mode -> http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=27555&CURRENT_...

Re: Which Wifi Router

My Asus RT-AC88RU should be delivered today.

I know how to put the virgin hub 3.0 into modem mode and that I can use the ethernet port closest to the white coax.  My question is which port on the ASUS do I plug into?

Many thanks

Re: Which Wifi Router

WAN should be coloured blue and be separate port. since the yellow ports are for devices e.g. PC/laptops/switches etc.
