SuperHub - alternative routers?

Well Im giving up with my new  Superb on the new to me Virgin service on the Big Kahoona bundle with the 200Mb service ... honestly my 25mb service i got before from Sky was better than this (don't recall any drop out issues /channel faffing about)

Lots of lag/buffering on TV services for the likes of Netflix etc ...

2G signal is well nigh useless and 5G doesn't seem stable enough it keeps dropping ..

Its got so bad i switched OFF the Wireless and plugged in my old Sky router ...at least now Wi Fi is stable ...

Called support and all they do is faff about telling you to use different channels ...that works for a day then it goes back to as bad as ever ..

Awful ..just plain awful kit... I also suspect Virgins DNS Servers suck - but that could just be the crap router..

Curious to know what other folk have done (I won't be the only one in this position I am sure)

Everyone else that knows better puts the super hub in modem mode gets their own setup/router.

Asus RT-AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless Broadband Router (1300 Mbps, USB 3.0/2.0, 2.4 GHz, 2 x 5 GHz, Downl...

Nothing will beat Wired yet though. My advice would be to use wifi for phones and mini devices and then run a cable everywhere else for stuff like gaming consoles.

A cable and wall clips beit inside or outside will save you £££.

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

I wired up my last house due to the difficulty getting wifi around it. Have had to use the sky router as a wireless switch effectively as I also have some legacy ip wireless cameras that can't talk to the superhub wifi , basically it's wep or nothing for them.

I want to avoid all the messy wiring stuff though so I plugged in a bunch of 500gb powerline adaptors which seem more than up to the job of streaming hd movies around the house.

Is a combined fibre modem and wifi router nor an option and bin the superhub completely though?

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

if it was that easy to bin these hubs I think many users on here would be million airs.

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

And your point is ?

Sorry I don't follow.  Binning these hubs really is that easy. .

If I follow this correctly it's put the hub into modem mode. .run a network cable to it from another router and use the new router to do your home networking. .and yes the home plugs really do make the provision of wired sockets simple to remote devices around the house without doing your own cat 6 wiring (which I did in a previous house)

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

You just rent the hub off VM; you can't physically bin them and connect your own stuff directly.  You can connect whatever you like to them though; I've got an old Netgear WNR1000 plugged into mine set up as an access point.  It's their property and should be returned to them if you terminate the contract.  AFAIK they're non-transferable, so if you get one off ebay for £2.50 it won't work.

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

I wasn't saying I would physically bin it..I am aware is their property.  However I am also sure any fibre capable modem of a suitable spec can be configured in place of it unless They have some way to interrogate the connected kit and of course it may be against the T's and c's of your contract so it's probably a moot point.

Doesn't change the basic fact that as routers they suck at the basics. .

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

The mac address of the the Superhub is linked to your account, any other modem you try should be rendered useless.

If you just want a modem, put the Superhub in modem mode and add your own router.

Re: SuperHub - alternative routers?

virgin is a different ball game compared to BT/Sky (login details), it can be done but as you stated already you risk getting locked up for nothing.
