Old Netgear Router - no wireless

I have Virgin media broadband, set up by a Virgin engineer in 2011.  I am using a Netgear N300 WNR 2000 router.  I never got wireless connection for my desktop but once connected via cable, could get wireless on laptop etc.  I recently updated to Windows 10.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I can no longer get wireless on laptop. My virgin  signal isn't even detected even in the same room.  I pay a monthly subscription to Virgin.  Not sure why I never got a Virgin router in 2011 but seems likely I need a new one now. The Netgear one is obsolete!   Really would prefer wireless connection for desktop too as having cable to trip over isn't safe at my age. Should I get a new Virgin router or one from PC World?  Any suggestions?
