Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

I'm having really bad issues with the wifi and my macbook. It pretty much unusable at home, but only seems to be with my macbook. My girlfriend was able to stream bbc iplayer from the ipad 15 metres away no problem... My macbook cant even load a page from the same room!

But I believe the issue lies with the router only because every other wifi connection I use (work x 4), other houses, pubs etc, it works perfectly fine.

Superhub wifi was installed June 2014.

Macbook Pro was bought Nov 2014.

The Wifi:

  • Seems to work fine with the other laptops in the flat
  • No problem with walls; we sit in the same room as the router
  • I've tried resetting it
  • I've tried changing it to modem mode and then back (was a nightmare - didnt realise the macbook doesnt have an ethernet socket so had to borrow a laptop from the neighbour!)
  • Results for network status are below
  • Set 5ghz to auto performance
  • Set 2ghz to channel 6 (no other wifi in the building uses this channel

  • Download Speed 58.6mb/s
  • Upload Speed 5.31mb/s

The macbook:

  • Time and number of connected devices doesn't make a difference (i've tried 6am with very little activity, midday with nobody in the house etc).
  • It just hangs for even the lightest of pages and can be waiting 5 minutes
  • Then sometimes you can hit refresh and things will load in a fraction of a second
  • I've tried closing google drive, dropbox, evernote, anything that could drain my bandwidth (if at all) but none of that makes a difference

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Hi jcolebristol,

Welcome to the community Smiley Happy

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the WiFi on your MacBook Pro.

I've been trying to test for any underlying causes for this issue, but I'm afraid I can't find any details for your account.  I've sent you a PM for details, if you could just reply when you get chance that'd be great.

In the mean time, you could try our help article here to see if there's anything useful Smiley Happy

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

I can see how this would annoy anybody.   Wifi drop out drive me nuts.  however there are a couple of things you can try.

Have you installed the recent software update 10.10.1  on your Mac?. This update did address a few things including wifi issues.

You can also configure your Superhub to use the best optimised wifi channels.  Your mac has a built in wifi sniffer which can suggest the best channels to use.

To access this utility      Alt+click on the wifi icon in your mac's menubar. From the drop down menu select 'Wireless Diagnostics"

The intro to wireless diagnostics  page appears.  from the menu bar  Choose 'Window>>Scan

The section on the left will suggest the best wifi channels to use.  You can then configure your superhub to broadcast on those wifi channels.

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Hi Bluesaffliction,

Thanks for the advice - yeh im on 10.10.1.

I've also changed the channel to the one that the mac suggests (1,3 for 2.4ghz and 36+40 for 5ghz).

I'm still experiencing this issue where it hangs for a minute or two and then comes back with super speed. Then it could be working fine for 3-4 mins then it starts hanging again. It's been a particular pain over Xmas as you cant finish a purchase on a website without it crashing! Typically its always around the payment part.

With that in mind, does the hanging suggest a different problem?

That really sucks how frustrating.   So to go further you need to isolate the issue.  If you connect your MacBook so your superhub via an ethernet cable do webpages load any better ?

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Thanks for your reply - i havent only because it doesnt have an ethernet socket and it seems like i need to buy on of these usb adaptors to manage it. didnt want to spend £20 just to test it.

Should I just bite the bullet and buy it or is there another way to test?

I've plugged it into other pc laptops that do have an ethernet socket and its certainly a little faster but they dont have a problem with wifi!

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Hi jcolebristol,

Thanks for the update, very strange that it's just the Macbook that has issues and only when connected to your SuperHub, before forking out for the adaptor I would try setting up a guest wireless network on the Hub and perhaps try changing the security mode from the default auto to WPA2-PSK to see if this helps.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Hi, I've got exactly the same issue. Have set up a guest network and changed the security. Same problem. Any other ideas?

Re: Macbook Pro very temperamental with Superhub Wifi!!

Also I'm posting from an iPad that is next to the MacBook and experiences none of the same issues.
