When Internet Explorer kept crashing I restarted the pc only to find I had no connection at all. A long session with technical support only resulted in the option of a complete recovery or re-install, which I was loathe to do, but the recovery failed. After an exhaustive search for answers I finally signed in as administrator on the command prompt msconfig and by sheer fluke clicked on Services and found many of the apps had been stopped. As soon as I enabled them all and restarted my pc, everything is back to normal. Hope this helps if anyone else has the same problem. I presume it was the Windows update.
