Cannot connect to home PC.

I have a port forward setup on my VM superhub so I can connect to my home PC via ssh  when working away.

I can connect fine from my network in Germany but not from Italy.

It seems last hop glfd-core-2b-ae2-0.network.virginmedia.net does not route if i am coming in on Italian network.

Re: Cannot connect to home PC.

Hello bonnydeal

Sorry you are having problems routing from Italy, how weird. The only thing I can think off is perhaps the hub was offline for some reason when you ran the trace from Italy. Is it still happening? I wonder if it is worth setting up a Broadband Quality Monitor so if the trace fails again at least you can compare it and see the hub was responding to pings at the time and take it from there.

Thank you

Nicola

Re: Cannot connect to home PC.

Hi

Thanks for your response.

I am now in Poland and experiencing the same issue as when in Italy.

I can see the router is indeed up, because if I first ssh to my server in Germany, I can ssh to my home PC with no problem.

Also I tried connecting directly from my laptop while I had another connection via Germany, and the connection via Germany was active the whole time, whereas from Poland ii can not connect. Same traceroutes as in OP.

Re: Cannot connect to home PC.

Hello @bonnydeal

Thanks for getting back, sorry we were a bit slow. It is something we could look into further however at the moment the hub is showing online but I am unable to get a reply from the WAN IP even direct from the CMTS. Do you have ICMP response disabled at the moment? If so would you be so kind as to leave it enabled and give us up to date trace routes again, we will keep an eye on this thread.

Many thanks

Nicola

Re: Cannot connect to home PC.

I am back home now. So i can only provide traceroute from my server in Germany:

traceroute to cpcnnnn-wokin-n-n-custn.n-ncable.virginm.net (x.x.x.x), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 10.255.255.253 (10.255.255.253) 0.583 ms 0.595 ms 0.790 ms
2 vl-1995.gw-distp-a.bap.rhr.de.oneandone.net (195.20.247.34) 0.263 ms * *
3 ae-2.bb-c.bap.rhr.de.oneandone.net (212.227.122.10) 10.257 ms 10.283 ms 10.278 ms
4 ae-5.bb-c.the.lon.gb.oneandone.net (212.227.120.50) 24.195 ms 24.390 ms 24.697 ms
5 linx-gw1.router.ntli.net (195.66.224.22) 17.438 ms 17.458 ms 17.452 ms
6 * * *
7 glfd-core-2b-ae2-0.network.virginmedia.net (213.105.159.246) 16.344 ms 16.368 ms 16.407 ms
8 * * *
9 cpcnnnn-wokin-n-n-custn.n-ncable.virginm.net (x.x.x.x), 27.174 ms 27.169 ms 27.125 ms

traceroute also works from an amazon AWS instance in the US.

So it is strange it does not work from Italy and Poland.

I have now experienced the same problem connecting when using the O2 mobile network in the UK.

It seems glfd-core-2b-ae2-0.network.virginmedia.net does not route for some source addresses ...

I have temporarily enabled ICMP response.

Hello bonnydeal

Thank you for that, are you okay to leave it enabled for a few days while we investigate please. I have asked our network engineers to take a look, once we hear back we will update you.

Many thanks

Re: Cannot connect to home PC.

Hello bonnydeal

Thank you for your patience, we have had a look and we are unable to find anything wrong with our network. Our engineer said:-

Ping to public IP addresses in Italy is good from the CMTS your hub is connected to, it suggests there is nothing wrong at the hub end, it may be a problem at the Italy site you are trying to ping from perhaps a firewall blocking or something or maybe using a vpn in Italy. There is no issue with regards to VM network.

Please keep us updated if you investigate further.

Thank you

Nicola
