200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

I have the Hub 3.0 in MODEM Mode using an ASUS RT-AC87U as my router. A problem which used to occur every few weeks has now become almost daily. I get around 220mbps dl and 21mbps upload with no issues. At some random point, I will notice my speed drops to around 60mbps dl but always remains at 21mbps ul.

The only way to resolve it is to power cycle the HUB 3.0.

It now has the latest 9.1.116V firmware but the same issue.

Called Virgin and the operator said she could see an issue with my power levels. We power cycled the router and sure enough, full speed again.

That was last night about 20:00. At 08:00 today it has dropped again!

Could someone please look at my Router Status comparison below and tell me if anything obvious is wrong?

The first set is when all is fine and dandy and the second is when the speed has crashed down to 60mbps. O and the ping changes from ~6ms to ~16ms. If I need to post anything extra just ask and I can do this when I get home from work.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

Hi CJS23,

Thanks for taking the time to post on the community.

I'm sorry to read that you are having issues with your broadband speeds.

Looking at your connection, the downstream power levels are too low and for this I would like to book an engineer appointment to adjust these for you. I've sent you a PM (purple envelope icon, right corner) requesting some details.

Hope to hear from you soon

Sam

Thanks for the rapid response, Sam.

Looking forward to the engineer visit and getting this annoying issue resolved.

I'll certainly update the Community once resolved.

Re: 200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

Alrighty then. Engineer came on Saturday 3rd December. Informed him that I had purchased a 25 metre cable, and that it was very high quality. Cable is from here

http://www.aerialsat.com/prod/25m-webro-hd100-aerial-satellite-coaxial-cable.html

Also explained that speed dropping occurred on the original Virgin Cable when I had a Superhub 2ac in a different room. Also explained that my speed would remain stable for long period including up to a few weeks on one occasion. I therefore doubt very much that it is related to my cable.

The engineer patronisingly said it was most likely my cable. OK, said I, please provide some measurements by measuring my cable so I can get my money back from the cable supplier (!). He then went to the box on the street and adjusted the power levels. I ran a Speedtest and got 160. I gently pointed out that I was used to a constant 200+ when stable. 160 is normal he said, anyways, your power levels were wrong before and they are all in green now.

As you can see from the Speedtest CSV results below, I turned off the Superhub 3.0 for a few moments, turned back on and have remained at 200+ until yesterday when I noted had gone back down to 124mbps.

In other words, the fix does not seem to be working.

Re: 200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

Hi Griffin

Thank you very much for the reply.

I paid for the ends to be crimped i.e. the cable came crimped from the supplier.

I use my Superhub 3.0 in MODEM Mode in conjunction with my ASUS RT-AC87U whose logs show nothing untoward.

Are there any special instructions for BQM with this setup, please?

Re: 200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

Further to my last post, the download speed has now dropped again to 85mbps, upload 21mbps (never drops).

5869001052[1].png

This is with Superhub 3.0 in MODEM mode to my ASUS RT-AC87U. CAT 6A cable direct to router. I have to disconnect to get Router Status from Superhub 3.0. Only way I can connect whilst in MODEM mode is to boot a laptop to Parted Magic, and clone my MAC address to the network card! I then have to log in to OneNote and copy and paste the stats to the cloud so I can come back to the forums and post in a legible format, lol!

As I say, any advice on how to set the BQM monitor up to the Superhub 3.0 in MODEM mode would be appreciated. I'll Google it in the meantime. Thanks for all your continued help, guys. I'm sure you can appreciate how frustrating this all is. Before I became a virgin customer, I would have been more than happy with the speeds I'm getting. However, I'm paying top whack for Vivid 200 and the Full House TV package and as such deserve to consistently get what I pay for. If I had to restart the MODEM once in a blue moon, then fair enough, but having to do this sometimes on a DAILY basis is tiresome.

The next post will be my Router Status stats before power cycling the MODEM and the one after that after power cycling the MODEM.

Cheers

Chris

Re: 200mbps to 60mbps speed drops almost daily now

Morning Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch and my apologies that you are still having the same issue.

I've just checked your line, the power levels are within range, there have been no time-outs since the router has been online and there are no apparent issues on the network that I could see that would cause this.

Just for testing, are you able to disconnect your equipment from the Hub and create a Broadband Quality Monitor to check the performance of your connection please? We need to rule out as much as we can to find out what is causing this issue.

Let us know how you get on

Sam
