Hi
I was aondering if anyone can give me some advice about upgrading my HTC Desire A8181 to Android 2.3, It`s not a S model, I would like to update it if possible and is there going to be a OTA update from VM or is there a place to download the update.
I saw on the htc site that they do have an update for the desire but its in a download formate and i`m not sure if it would be compatable with the VM network.
Any advice would be brill. Thanks.

There has been no OTA update to 2.3 for the Desire from HTC or any of the networks. The only 2.3 update released by HTC was a "developers only" (and at your own risk) version which also has some bits removed because the HTC Desire is tight on space. This had to be downloaded to a PC and run from there. Data on the Desire's SD card was OK but all internal memory was/is over-written by the update.
It is probably best avoided unless you are prepared to take the risk and remember that it is not suppprted by HTC and won't be updated/have fixes applied in the future.

I updated my desire to gingerbread. I would say that it isn't worth it. You loose memory space so you can't have as many apps.

Looks pretty unsupported to me ![]()
From the engadget website
"We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Still, at least HTC gave (some of) us the choice. Visit the source link below for deliberately spooky instructions."
They didn't release it in North America, Japan, Korea etc

When I upgraded to gingerbread, I downloaded the official HTC update. It worked fine. It even remembered my apps. I can't recall if it remembered the email account info tho.

.. and one thing I forgot to mention, there have been official HTC updates to 2.2 released (to unbranded units, anyway) since the "developers" 2.3 (which has not and will not, say HTC, be updated) was made available. I can't remember the details of the 2.2 update but I think they were pretty minor.
