I've got a Karoo email account which I've set up on my virgin mobile, but I can't send. I can receive emails, but not send. Karoo said:
We do not allow customers to use our outgoing mail server when off our network, which is why you get the error stating that your phone cant connect to the mail server.
You will need to use the virgin outgoing mail server if you want to send mail from your mobile.
But the Virgin SMTP doesn't work either.
Anyone else on Karoo who's managed to sort this out?

well, thanks, I found it, but that's about setting up a Virgin media email on an iphone - mine's a Karoo email not a Virgin one.
My problem is that the Virgin instructions for setting up my POP3 email on my virgin phone tell me to use smtp.karoo.co.uk, but Karoo tell me I can't use that and must use the Virgin SMTP address but that doesn't work either.
There must be other Karoo customers on Virgin Mobile who've cracked this?????

you can send 3rd party email addresses over smtp.virginmedia.com, but there are some provisos and caveats:
1) you must register your 3rd party email address within your VM webmail account
2) you must authenticate the smtp.virginmedia.com server using that VM account as username and password
your emails will show as being From: you@virginmedia.com on behalf of you@3rdparty.com
There is no obvious way around this issue. You must authenticate the smtp server using your VM account credentials, and if it then failed to show your VM account in the headers your email would look like spam and not get very far.
See:
If Karoo have an smtp server which does use authentication then that should let you send from any network connection - but you seem to be saying that they don't. That would have been the proper solution to the issue, and would have avoided the 'on behalf of' issue.

I don't have a virgin webmail or email account. I have nothing from Virgin but my mobile.
Here's the Virgin instructions for setting up my email on my HTC Desire Z clearly Virgin thinks I can use my karoo SMTP:
Setting up the data account
Setting up the Email account
The settings are saved and the service is ready for use.
Setting details
Below are the details of your settings
| Name: | ||
| Email Address: | ||
| Username: | ||
| Password: | ||
| Protocol: | ||
| Incoming Server Address: | pop.karoo.co.uk | |
| Outgoing Server Address: | smtp.karoo.co.uk

"I don't have a virgin webmail or email account. I have nothing from Virgin but my mobile."
Then you have a problem. Karoo don't seem to allow off-network connection to their smtp server (i.e. you must be connected via a karoo internet connection).
Virginmedia do allow connections to smtp.virginmedia.com from off-network, but clearly only for their own customers - that is the whole point about smtp authentication, you need a username and password. You are not a Virginmedia broadband customer, so you don't have a username/password to authenticate with.
The fault really lies with Karoo, who are offering you a second rate email service which only works if over their own landline connection.
One solution would be to get a Gmail or Hotmail account - I'm pretty sure they offer proper services that will work via your mobile phone.

Hi,
I have the same problem with my Nokia N8 on Karoo with Virgin. Although, it was worknig for a time with smtp.virginmedia.com as the outbound mail server. Strange!
Have you managed to solve this please?
