May I suggest - firstly set up a data usage warning / limit (below the allowance amount) on the phone, then ensure that they know how to check how much they have used and got left (i.e. the My Account app), and then make it very clear that they will be paying any extra charges incurred.
Since they went through the entire data allowance in about 5 days is a tariff with a bigger data allowance a consideration?
