Just bought a new sim pay monthly pn the web.
I put it into my new iphone SE yesterday but I get no service.
I wonder if the fact that I was in Italy and not in the UK when I first put the sim in the phone might be the problem. Roaming is enabled.

I assume that you mean roaming is enabled on your phone.
On new Virgin Pay Monthly accounts roaming is turned off by default.
If you are still abroad you will need to contact customer services to get it activated and a deposit may be required by new (less than three months) customers: +447953 967 967.
From the UK: 0345 6000 789 (standard rate call) if you are having a problem activating your SIM.
