Monthly charge

My billing period starts the second of the month. My son got a new phone for Christmas, I signed up for a second sim on my account for his phone on the 31st of December (I have email conformation). The SIM arrived on the 6th of January, yet upon looking at this months bill, Virgin have charged me a months usage for the month up until the 2nd of January.

From my previous experiences, sim cards arnt active for billing until they have been activated, so I dont know why Virgin want to charge me for the previous month?

Any suggestions?
