I got a payg sim and when I topped it up the balance was just £2.00 available, I used 90p in texts but it has cost me £10

have you registered your SIM? If so log into your Virgin Mobile account and you should be able to see the usage.
Otherwise I can only guess. Are you using a "smartphone"? If so, unless you've disabled mobile data your phone is likely to have been connecting and incurring you a £1 daily charge.
