unstable ping

Hello everyone,

I had BT Infinity for a long time and every day i would ping check bbc.co.uk, usually 11am, 6pm and 11pm and forever my ping was 20-23ms and usually all 4 pings would have the same ms

With Virgin on a good day it bounces from 20-36ms but right now it's 32-40ms with some timed out and getting the red packet loss icon in battlefield.

Usually i would ping bbc 4 time's and 3 would be in the low 20's and 1 would alway's be in the 30s, why is the ping so unstable compared to BT's Fibre/Copper network

No matter what site i ping the 4 request's are all different while BT's was alway's the same.

I know people will ask why i'm complaining about my ping changing by about 10ms but to me i'm a gamer and while wasting my money on "gaming" hardware to get the lowest delay i want the lowest stable ping, it's just annoying i thought i was upgrading from BT and yes i upgraded the speed but downgraded the gaming side

Every day it's like this, there's always some pings that are around 70ms no matter what said i ping.

With BT it would always be around 21023ms on the bbc site unless bt or bbc site were having problems

Re: unstable ping

FYI The forum team respond to the oldest post waiting for a reply. This means if you keep posting on the thread then it will bump you to the bottom of their list.

The downstream power levels posted are within the recommended spec of -6 to +10 but only just.  If they were to fluctuate and drop below -6 it could cause you problems.  If you could post the upstream figures and the network log it would give a fuller picture of your connection.

Re: unstable ping

The empty log is a bit strange.  The upstream power levels are also within the recommended range but quite close to the maximum recommended level which is 51.  So again if that was to fluctuate and go above 51 then it could cause disconnections.

When you are disconnected is it both wired and wireless devices that disconnect or just wireless?

Do the lights on the hub change colour or go off when you get disconnected?

Re: unstable ping

The log was fine until my last problem which was money's ago regarding very slow speed on http but since the fix the logs don't update.

The lights don't change, the connection drops and reconnects in a few seconds, all devices lost Internet.

I use my own router, Asus rt-n56u and it shows a disconnection from the modem, I removed my router and changed the hub back router/modem mode and it still loses connection and the lights still don't change.

Today's pings are bouncing between 20ms-40ms average but some around 70ms.

Playing battlefield 1 is a nightmare as all I see is the packet lost icon constantly showing throughout the match

Re: unstable ping

Hey bobajob84,

Thanks for posting Smiley Happy

Sorry to hear about the issues with your ping, I know it's frustrating when you're trying to play online.

As Scott pointed out, it is odd about the lack of data in your reports, and you said it's stopped recording stats recently.

Something isn't right, I don't see a problem with the cable, so it might be worth replacing the Hub.

I'll drop you a PM (purple envelope, top right) to discuss this further.

Speak with you soon,

Take care.

Re: unstable ping

Just thought i'd update this since i'm waiting on an engineer to come out and fix my upstream but since my last post i was offered a deal to move to the 300mbit line which is terrible.

I started testing these at 10pm tonight and before i had the 300mbit line my 200mbit line was maxing out most speedtests with only some dropping down in the low 100's, heres the results of tonights.

Virgin
Glasgow 19mbit
Manchester 30mbit
Edinburgh 52mbit
Basildon 33mbit
Bristol 29mbit

Douglas
Manx 27mbit

Carlisle
Gemini 27mbit
Solway 16mbit

Preston
Boundless 33mbit
BT 28mbit

Dublin
Digiweb 128mbit
Vodafone 12mbit

That's my 300mbit line, i didnt add upload as it always maxes out at 19/20mbit
