is this bad routing?

so my clan decided to get a battlefield 4 server, we previously had one a good year ago, anyway i went on it and noticed my ping was 48, i was baffled, its a uk server, so i went to a german server and my ping was 30ms o.o, how do you work that out, how can my ping be less to a server a good 400+ miles away to one thats probably less than half that.

my other provider which is bt, is giving me 12ms, which is about right. is this down to virgin?

Re: is this bad routing?

hes a comparison of my bt vs my virgin, so why is the ping so much higher on the last few hops? bearing in mind the spikes on bt are due to the wifi signal not being the best.

Re: is this bad routing?

Its the route after peering that's the difference.

BT are handing off to cogentco who are routing it direct. VM are handing it off to Aorta who arent.

Re: is this bad routing?

@ForumTeam

Could you ask networks to take a look to see if there's anyway to improve the route?

I'm not an expert on routing metrics, but it seems odd that a connection that terminates in London should leave the UK and then return.

Re: is this bad routing?

its so confusing, it really is, it seems like its just happening on battlefield 4. i was thinking it cant be due to the network due the ping being high after the first 8 hops but i dno.

also i can see what you mean now, its routing it to france im guessing and then back.

Re: is this bad routing?

Hi arronlowley,

The routing is different though it'll be of no surprise to note that aorta.net is affiliated to Liberty Global!

I'll certainly take steps to determine if there is a reason for this routing path and whether or not a change would be made on the basis of the slightly elevated ping times.

I'll keep you updated on that.

The other thing I noted when testing your connection was that the Channel SNR is very low. This would have an impact on performance so I've escalate it to Networks for investigation. As soon as they provide me with a fault reference I'll let you know.

I'll be in touch Smiley Happy

Re: is this bad routing?

my channels snrs are too low? I thought they were best around 0, also ive done a traceroute on my dads sky fttc connection and this one also goes directly to the server, so it seems like its only virgin routing it weirdly.

but yeah, nobody in the uk should get higher ping to a server that close compared to one so far.

Re: is this bad routing?

You're confusing SNR (signal to noise ratio)  With power levels.

Re: is this bad routing?

dont see how it can be my connection though as i havent seen any speed reduction and every other game is fine, its just that one server that im getting higher ping on and as you can see from the trace, virgin is routing it out of the uk and back in.
