Timing out to US server

Hi there,

We appear to be having issues with connection to the game Anarchy Online in the US. I was told by tech support that this is due to network upgrades and that the expected resolve time is January 2017!!. Considering that I pay a monthly subscription to the game and a large amount each month to Virgin for what is essentially a connection used primarily for gaming I am none too happy about this. Here is my tracert results, is there any chance that the route to the server in question could be diverted around what appears to be a deadzone between Southampton and Manchester on the Virgin network?

The amount of connection loss is stopping me from maintaining a stable connection with the game servers. Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Rich

Re: Timing out to US server

Thts not packet loss, its VM's infrastructure not replying to ICMP requests.

Your issue (high latency I assume, you haven't specified) is with peering from VM to Aorta.

Can you run a test - connect to a free VPN  and run the traceroute again?

The issue that technical support have referred to would cause high latency at the first few hops, which aren't in evidence on your traceroute.

Re: Timing out to US server

This issue isn't high latency, the game itself isn't really relying on a low latency that much as its an MMO. The issue is constant disconnects during gameplay (messages on login such as can't find the login handler server), and when moving between zones on the server that require loading a new area (also i assume handled by the login server)

Not quite sure how to do the VPN connection that you mentioned.

Re: Timing out to US server

I did try a couple of online trace routes from different places around europe and found none of the time outs when the connection didn't involve the VM network.

It is strange though, I've been playing this game for over 7 years on my VM connection and not once have I had this kind of issue. This only started a few days ago and now the connection seems not to hold, regardless of the time of day. I'm wondering if VM has the ability to route around this 'dark zone' in the network?

Re: Timing out to US server

It may be the high latency is causing the server to drop the connection. But there is no "darkzone"  Thats the only issue evident on that trace-route.

Next thing we need to know is it JUST the connection to that server thats dropping or is everything else?

Re: Timing out to US server

Yes, that is the only issue I appear to be having at the moment. All other connections seem to be stable and fast.

Re: Timing out to US server

I'm also getting errors like 504-gateway not found. The game i'm trying to play uses port 80 for TCP... I've read elsewhere on the forums that VM has recently introduced some kind of filter on port 80 traffic, could this potentially be the cause. Some kind of input from VM themselves would be appreciated at this point..

Re: Timing out to US server

Takes up to a week for a staff response ATM.

In light of the other errors, can we do some more troubleshooting in the meantime?

How are you connecting to the HUB?- Also can you set up a BQM

HERE

Run it for say 24 hrs, and post the result.

Dont forget youll need to make sure your super hub is configured to reply to ICMP echo requests...

Re: Timing out to US server

Thanks for the response. I've set the router to respond to ICMP requests in advanced settings. My desktops PC's both use a wired connection to the router. I've registered for an account and have setup a BQM to run overnight.
