Regular dropouts, cause known, simply needs resolving.

I've been having issues with my connection for the last week plus. My connection, on roughly an hours basis, would cut out for but a minute. Not an issue for general use but I play a lot of online games that require a constant connection.

After talking to customer services and the issue persisting I had an engineer over to try and solve the issue. Engineer came and looked, couldn't work out what the direct problem was but replace a potentially 15 year old connection to see if that was the cause. Unfortunately not.

As the problem persisted and with it's eerie regularity, I started looking into the problem myself. Turns out my DHCP for my WAN IP is set to a one hour lease. This lease expiration lines up with my connection timeouts pretty much exactly, or slightly less and the router preempts the expiration and refreshes the lease before it runs out.

What I want is for this DHCP WAN IP lease to be extended to once a day or a week so I can game without dying due to timeouts Smiley Sad

Hi Otiosenexus,

Welcome to the community and thanks for posting.

Sorry to read you are experiencing intermittent broadband connection. I can imagine how annoying this must be.

If you log into the router settings page and change the lease time of the DHCP, does this work at all?

Or if you try a factory reset does it change the lease time?

Try this and let us know how you get on

Sam

It's the external WAN IP lease time that is the issue. It's a regular issue that I can almost time. I managed to get through to the right people that understood the issue via customer service and it's been left with them. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.

Thanks for replying though, I'm post again if the issue remains unsolved after the teams it's left with finish. Smiley Happy

Re: Regular dropouts, cause known, simply needs resolving.

Not yet, I was quoted 4-5 working days to fix. That will be about Thursday so I'll give them some time to fix it before I call them. Would really like to play online for more then 40 minutes at a time D:

Turns out though the lease time is supposed to be weeks or there abouts, not even just daily like I thought it was. So odd..

Best why to check if this is the issue your facing is log into your routers homepages (probably IP address 192.168.100.1), go to advanced settings and find Network Status under Device management (assuming you router is the same as mine). In there you should see a listing for Internet Connection and under that Lease Time Remaining, plus some other information. Remember not to share your WAN IP.

For me this let me predict with about a 5 minute margin when my connection would die. When you connection drops out immediately check this page again and if the Lease Time Remaining says just under and hour you know whats going on. I imagine others may experience different troublesome lease times, it's likely possible.

I got the most help when I got through to a call center that I imagine wasn't an outsourced one and they understood what I was talking about. Pretty much just said that my lease time appears to be an hour and its causing a regular and predictable connection timeout. They put me through to a specialist team and they knew the problem wasn't right so got it sorted from there, passing the information to a 'resolution team'. Just waiting on them as I said.

If this doesn't work I'll probably just end up with a new router. Whatever works eh?
