Ping latency issues - tracert and BQM monitor included!

Hey there.

Virgin media customer for a year now, we were likely to move, but it seems I am staying at my current property for another year, and would love it if someone could take a look at this data;

I get intermittent ping/latency issues with games.

My BQM can be seen here, monitored over a day with little usage.

A trace to www.google.com, seems I am timing out on my first hop?

Tracing route to www.google.com [172.217.23.36]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Re: Ping latency issues - tracert and BQM monitor included!

Don't worry about the timeouts, they are normal on Virgin Media. Many of their servers are configured not to respond to pings.

Your graph looks about right for a Hub 3, is that what you're using? Unfortunately the Hub 3 suffers from latency issues due to a problem with the Intel chip it uses: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2016/12/intel-working-fix-virgin-media-superhub-3-router-latenc...

If it's a particular problem you could ask about switching to a SuperHub 2AC which doesn't have this fault.

Re: Ping latency issues - tracert and BQM monitor included!

I'd have to agree with CJE.

Everything looks as good is it is going to get until the firmware is updated (fixed).

My Broadband Ping - Work

This is a VM Business connection on the Hitron router which is also affected with the Puma 6 chipset being just plain rubbish.

And again CJE is correct, timeout means nothing in the trace as long as you can reach the destination you're tracing the hops will sometimes block ICMP responses in which case you will just see a 'timeout' message.

Re: Ping latency issues - tracert and BQM monitor included!

Thanks for the clear answers all.

Reading a lot out the Superhub 3 issues, do you think Modem Mode might help balance the load on the chip? Or sit tight until a firmware upgrade.

Cheers.

Re: Ping latency issues - tracert and BQM monitor included!

I don't think it clears the issue up because it's still using the affected chipset to funnel the traffic to your NAT device (cable router in this case).

It might help local networking to use a decent cable router, there are plenty out there but unfortunately the hi-spec ones aren't exactly cheap, especially if you're looking at good WiFi coverage and speeds. I'm currently using the Linksys WRT1900ac, pricing here. It's pretty much faultless in it's operation and has been able to handle everything I can throw at it. It's something I would recommend for home users but there are plenty of powerful features available as well.

As for the time you will have to wait for that firmware, it could be a long while.
