Packet-Loss to NCSoft servers (See tracert)

Good afternoon,

I've been getting a lot of issues with disconnects with a game due to I believe packet loss. Could you take a look?

Server I'm attempting to reach: 64.25.37.132

88% packet loss when I hit the host just before the server (dls-b22-link.telia.net)

I'm having to use mobile internet to play the game, which has no packet loss when the same test is ran.

Thanks.

Re: Packet-Loss to NCSoft servers (See tracert)

Your pastes are private so we can't see what you're seeing. You say you're getting timeouts before a server so that says to me that you're doing a tracert. It's normal to get timeouts in traceroutes because firewalls tend to block that type of traffic but it should be timing out all the time. I've tried pinging the IP you've given and it's timing out for me.

Re: Packet-Loss to NCSoft servers (See tracert)

Oh no,

Didn't realise. Please try again now Smiley Happy

It's just strange because I keep getting disconnected from the game and data error from the game, no matter what PC I am on and believed it may be an issue with the routing. I contacted NCSoft and they advised me to contact Virgin to check the routing drops...

There is this server: updater.nclauncher.ncsoft.com which accepts pings and uses the same route for me. I also get a slight packet loss to this too. Could there be something wrong with the modem? We don't see any issues else where...

Thanks

Re: Packet-Loss to NCSoft servers (See tracert)

I don't get any packet loss on that second address. I've had a look at the tracerts and they're as expected. I've also done a quick search on Google and I can see it's a common issue and that NCSoft have a habit of telling customers that a hop in a trace where ICMP is blocked is the connection to the server dropping which is not correct. Which game is it specifically that you are trying to play?

Hi George

Rather than just rely on tracert's, I'd try setting up a Think Broadband Quality Monitor to check the state of your connection.

Hey,

It's Lineage II I'm trying to play. Yeah it's strange. If I use my mobile dongle I see no packet, just on the fixed line connection. Who knows

Hi George

First thing I note - the BQQM shows NO packet loss.  This would be evident as area's of red at the top of the graph.

So lets have a look at the WinMTR results

The ones where there is no response from host are simply dropping ICMP echo packets, we can see the trace continuing past them so we know the traffic is continuing.  Possibly the last hop is ignoring ICMP echo as well, which causes the trace to continue for the full 30 possible hops.

Lets look a the packet loss.

We can safely ignore the loss on some of them as the next hop shows 0% loss  Note that ICMP has a lower priority response so if a node is busy routing traffic it may delay or drop ping responses.

For example

nrth-ic-1-ae1-0.network.virginmedia.net - 15 | 592 | 506 | 10 | 21 | 113 | 24 |

Might seem worrying until you see the next hop has 0% packet loss.

It would be interesting to see a comparison winmtr over the mobile connection at the same time.  However from what I can see there's no issue on Virgin Media's side of the connection, any issues are occuring closer to the ncsoft side, possibly on one of the peering partners.

Re: Packet-Loss to NCSoft servers (See tracert)

Hey, done a quick 200 run

http://pastebin.com/xC6EM3Ww - Mobile internet - I guess the last hop is blocking ICMP on this, as well is the destination.

http://pastebin.com/nPMEq1UX

Just running a longer one to see if there's any difference... Still having issues. Sometimes the site doesn't load, sometimes the launcher which checks for updates fails due to a connection error. Sometimes the game connection drops possibly... It's odd

You do know that if you can paste it into pastebin, you can actually paste it in here as well?

I usually use the insert code icon (looks like a page with </> on it)  Although make sure you've added at least one extra blank line below it when doing so as one of the forum quirks makes it impossible to get out of otherwise.

Again nothing sticks out at me.

It might be worth asking ncsoft to do a winmtr the other way to see the reverse path.  Which can sometimes be different
