Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

I'm just after some advice to see if there is an issue between my Virgin connection and the Xbox live servers.

Every since Tuesday 20th Oct last week, the speeds have dropped down to around 2Mbp/s and max of 20Mbs.

It's not the xbox or cable as I can just unplug the ethernet cable from one router to the Talk Talk connections and speeds are back up to 45Mbps (which is nearly the max on the talk talk connection).

Prior to last Tuesday, I could achieve around 177Mb on the Xbox connection.

There hasn't been a change to the rest of the setup, and the router is performing well with thinkbroadband and speedtest.net tests.

So this leads me to think it may be a link between the Microsoft servers and my Virgin connection.

I cannot ping the xbox server as I don't know the correct address.

This is for downloads and the advanced detailed network stats.

I am on Virgin 200Mbs, the Superhub is in Modem mode. My Netgear R7500 router is performing fine wired and wireless on all other devices.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Hi Domestoz,

There are no issues I'm aware of at present but I'm always open to some diagnostics Smiley Happy

Your connection looks fine and since you're getting good speeds and latency on tests I don't think this is specific to your connection.

I'm aware of an update to the dashboard causing the MTU on the xbox to drop to 510. Could you run a connection test on the xbox and let us know what this shows?

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not on the beta dashboard so my MTU is still 1480 on the xbox dash.
The xbox works fine with my other broadband connection.
As requested I shall run a connection test this evening and post the results.

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Hi John.
OK. Via the Virgin connection the speed is 11.24Mbps. Ping is 160ms. Packet loss is 0 and MTU is 1480.

Via Talk Talk the speed is 50.13Mbps. Ping is 158ms. Packet loss is 0 and the MTU is 1480.

The same cat 6 ethernet is used for both.

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Hi Domestoz,

Cheers for the info. There's definitely something up with the virgin connection then. We can ignore the high ping on the tests as the xbox test servers are in Seattle and that high a ping is normal. I've double checked your connection and everything looks fine from the hub to the local network. Could you run a traceroute to the Xbox servers from both the VM and Talk talk connections and post them here so we can compare?

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Hi John,
Thanks again for the reply. I tried the xbox direct into the virgin hub and still received slow speeds.
I am aware of the high ping is normal, but thanks for clarification.

I don't actually know what address I should run a traceroute too. Maybe you can assist with that?

I'm wondering if the slow speed is now down to single thread downloads being slow?

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Morning John,

Just a quick update...... I have just performed a test at 6.55am today and the result is showing good speeds.

Download is 176.04Mbps.  The second test is swowing 196.22Mbps.

However I did perform a test last night and it was showing 11 Mbps.

To me this suggests a congested link somewhere?

Unfortunately I still haven't found the correct address to run a traceroute to.

Thanks again.

Re: Looking for advice for Xbox one connection issues (slow speed)

Thanks for the info Domestoz,

I agree it sounds like a congested link though a 9am slow down isn't usual.

For now I'd say try a trace to bbc.co.uk to see if there is anything in our core network.

Hi John,

I've just tried another test and getting 30.45Mbps.  But with 1% packet loss.
