Latency Issues.... Again...

Morning all.

I'm no stranger to the problems on V.M's networks.

But this is a new one for us. Generic spikes in latency all day every day...

Area 05 ( Gloucester ). Anyone else?

Most noticeable of course in games.

And yes:- I'm on a cabled, gigabit LAN connection, 10ft from the SH3 ( which is rebooted every night on a timer ).

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

SH3 puma 6 chipset problem.. vm don't seem to be acknowledging the issue. it's affecting everyone with a SH3.

Try this website to test: http://www.dslreports.com/tools/puma6

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

And vm don't appear to have any stock of the shub2ac to send to hub 3 users

Only option is to wait for a new firmware to correct the puma 6 issues and the low bandwidth dos or hope there a new shub on the way

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

Hey.

I'm not convinced that this is the puma6 issue... which is a pretty well documented denial-of-service condition now.

The behaviour on the line is different from the last time I was running logging due to V.M's nightmare network:

results here: http://www.longfils.co.uk

The latency is decidedly different this time.

That puma6 bug has to has someone actively flooding your IP with guff-traffic. This pattern is all day every day. It reeks of over-usage to me...

Wibble, I dunno. I've heard so many pathetic excuses from V.M in the past.

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

There's two distinct issues with the SH3 / puma 6.

#1 is latency / packet loss on UDP and small TCP packets.
#2 is the denial of service security issue, it's a separate problem to #1.

Everyone who has a SH3 is affected by issue #1. But for #2, yes somebody would need to be sending malicious traffic.

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

The hub 3 has 2 issues with it

Puma 6 chipset increased latency and packet loss

And the low level bandwidth dos which you describe above which is different from the increased latency

Do you have a BQM running ?

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

Well I had a long chat with "Jonathan" from 2nd Line Network Support...

Said they're going to escalate the issue to 3rd Line.

So many people on here seem to be affected also. :- (

Really is a terrible ISP.

Re: Latency Issues.... Again...

Just had a conversation with a chap from 2nd line who say Networks can't investigate beyond the local CMTS...

Well.... not a great start. They're of the impression that ICMP may be de-prioritised on the networks.

So I've given my logging backend an overhaul to do UDP and TCP HPing results as well as storing Traceroute attempts...

One day I'll tidy all this up and sell it lol.

Anyway, see how we get on. New graphing available here: http://longfils.co.uk/

At least until my server's HDD fills up!!

Trying to get anywhere within support is going to get your frustrated. The issue you are seeing is very much the same thing all others with the hub 3 suffer with. It's not just TCP and UDP either, obviously ICMP, but ARP etc, it's all suffering with it. There is a patch soon to be tested which I believe will be a our version of the 93V released across the pond in April, which helps, but certainly doesn't fix it.

They are correct that ICMP traffic isn't prioritised, so doing an MTR for example may show packets dropping on a node when it's busy for example.
