High Ping unless in Modem only Mode.

Hi,

For the last month or so my ping has been all over the place, generally connecting in the server at 16 and shooting over 400 in EVERY game that I have tried on PC and PS4.

My PC and PS4 are wired connected to the router.

My download speeds and upload speeds have been to be expected on speedtest.net I currently have 200mb package.

I have been on the phone to virgin technical support a fair few times and even had an engineer to my house, but to no luck couldn't seem to find the cause of my problem.

Been wired connected I never thought about putting my the superhub  in modem mode, just by off chance I thought i'd give it a try.

To my surprise every game I played on

games include

rocket league, counter strike source, CS:GO and modern warfare 2

I had no lag spikes.

When router was enabled I turned off all wireless connections that I had I.e tablets and phones but at no prevail.

Is there are problem with my superhub?

Any ideas would be great. cheers.

Re: High Ping unless in Modem only Mode.

On further note :-

Modem only mode also fixed the lag issues that I was experiencing on black ops 3 on PS4.

Re: High Ping unless in Modem only Mode.

If you know your WAN IP gateway your on (it is not 192.168.something. Something or the like) you can run ping -t that IP or just do ping -t 194.168.4.100

With that running do a speedtest and see what happens.

Re: High Ping unless in Modem only Mode.

what is an acceptable amount of buffer bloat that wont affect gaming?

I did a speed test on dslreports.com

<a href="http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/4162855"> <img src="http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest...

on download I got 39ms and upload I got 192ms avg.

This is the first time ive heard of buffer bloat if you could get back to me it would be great.

thanks!

Been in modem Mode since 2011, never looked back.

Red (VM SH2 AC Beta tester)
Running on 200Mb VM service with SH2 AC in Modem Mode, with a ASUS RT-N66U router. With this setup I get Fantastic WIRED and WIRELESS Signals in my home. I dont work for VM. But I work in IT, and I know my tech.
My advice is at your own risk.

Its complicated buffer bloat only happens when your maxing your upto limit in download or upload or both so the point I'm getting at is don't download or upload the super hub/hub has no QoS and likely the reason your buffer bloat test shows good for just your download it that the buffer size is optimized for 200Mb on rate limiting and that too is complicated even if it does not seem to it to which you can do just the size of the buffer or and with number of packet limit which is very useful for per flows in a QoS. So if you don't download or upload that you know about and not being DoS you can game but to game and download or upload you need QoS as in your own setup/router but your QoS is only as good as the bandwidth available as said in my link above.
