High Latency Whilst Gaming

I'm on the VIVID Gaming 200 Optical Fibre package, but i can't even game! Ping is all over the place.

My Broadband Ping - Virgin Media (Belkin USB)


My upstream modulation is at 16qam? Is this normal?.

I've got no ethernet devices, directly hooked up with cable sent in the box


Any thoughts?

I've rang in now twice, and their answer is to port forward! It does NOT help me with my latency!

So this is a normal line then.

Think i'll just cancel the service.

Anyone who happens to  read this: Do NOT go with virgin media! They have poor latency and poor customer service who'll just restart your router and change the wireless channel and claim it's fixed.

Thanks for posting and apologies for the late reply here. I've run some checks on your hub/network segment and everything is looking great. Traffic on your network segment is low and I can't see any issues affecting your hub. I noticed a lot of devices are connected over wifi, are you connected wired or wireless when playing online?  Can you post a trace route for us to look at?

I've tried both wireless and wired for gaming - both result in random high pings. Wired/Wireless does not explain the BQM graph i have.

If the hub and network segment i'm connected to is fine then my guess is the line from my house to said segment is questionable.

Thanks for keeping in touch, and for the information supplied. I am sorry to see you have continued to have trouble with your connection.

 

I have taken a look and things look ok from this side. That being said with the BQM as it is and no other obvious issues from this side I would like to get an engineer out to take a look at the connection for you. 

 

Keep an eye out for the Purple Envelope, top right hand corner.

The Engineer came out and verified there was nothing wrong with my setup at home and the line to cabinet was fine. He said the cabinet does require some maintenance and there seems to be a lot of loose connections. 

BQM has been worse at peak times and the noise per se has not improved, so i'm guessing some issue is ongoing in the area.

Thanks for getting in touch to let us know about your high latency whilst gaming, I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I have tested your connection from here and everything looks great! No errors or time outs inside the Hubs logs and all of your power levels are within the preferred ranges.

Are you still having these issues? If so, how are you connected wired or wireless?

Do you notice these issues at any specific times of day or all times?

Also when these issues occur do you notice any change to the Hubs light sequence?

Thanks for your reply.

We have already gone over these issues, and it is impractical for me to test latency throughout the day or specific times of the day - hence the use of the BQM tool.

I've tried both wireless and wired for gaming - both result in random high pings. Wired/Wireless does not explain the BQM graph i have.

If as you say the hub and network segment i'm connected to are fine and having now established, according to the engineer, that the equipment at home and the line to the cabinet is fine - with the cabinet requiring some maintenance, all of which do NOT explain the noise on the BQM.

So, if we summarise this, then we have the following possible reasons:

1. There is some issue we are unaware of within the infrastructure which is causing this
2. The cabinet may be responsible as it does require some maintenance - according to your own engineer
3. The equipment at home is faulty - i can try running in modem mode only and see how that affects the BQM
