Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Hi there,

I am looking to play some Dreamcast games online which use dial up, I wondered if XL virgin phone customers get free calls via data calls as I would if I was calling someone via a phone line as I cannot see anywhere on the site regarding data call changes to landline customers

As it would be a local rate or 0845 number that would be dialed via the Dreamcast

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Why Dial up? You could actually get a LAN card for it, so you can connect via RJ45. I am sure if you look around you can easily get one even though it is no longer made.

EDIT: Better yet for cheaper, you can do it through a Raspberry PI - http://blog.kazade.co.uk/p/dreampi.html?showComment=1444254944508

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Hi thanks for your reply

I already own the BBA for it (Broadband Adapter) but only a 3 games are supported with it:

Toy Racer
Quake 3 Arena
Phantasy Star Online

All the rest of the games are modem dial up only so instead of running up huge phone bills like I used to do back in the day when playing Dreamcast online as I pay nearly £80 a month to Virgin Media I thought maybe I could get dial up for free via data calls by landline

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Not sure about now, but back in the day if you had broadband you could use dial up for free also. Not sure about now though, does old 56k lines still exist or did they make way for ADSL lines from VM?

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

You will incur a charge once the call makes it past 59m59s and be charged for the whole call. so would not matter what package your on for the phone line.
It will also depend on the number being dailed by the dreamcast.

200Mb(SH2 SH2AC Hub 3.0), 2 X V6 TV XL, Phone M. 100Mb Business (Hitron Hub).

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Just to expand on the reply above..

If you are using the  BBA you will connect using your LAN side equipment, VM dont care its a dreamcast making the connection- no charge is applicable

If you are using the dial up Modem (which I assume is the case) its irrelevant its data going down the line, it will be treated as a phone call. So you need to work out if the number dialed is in your inclusive calls (AMW smiths advice applies, hang up after an hour) or not (in which case the whole call is chargeable). Without knowing your package and what calls are free/chargeable and what number you are dialing through the modem its difficult to be more specific.

Re: Dreamcast Online gaming via Dial up (Costs?)

Hi there

Thanks all for the replies, as mentioned above I already own the Dreamcast BBA (Broadband Adapter) but some games are not supported with the BBA and would only connect via a modem and dialling a number.

I am on the XL phone package the largest that currently can be purchased, the number that was likely to be dialed was an 01248 number found here http://www.ispreview.co.uk/isp_list/ISP_Detail_Dialup.php?Fast.co.uk-79 looking at the type of number this would be included in my call package and that as mentioned by replies here I'll just disconnect after an hour.

Emulation for the Dreamcast without messing around cannot be played online and not a fan on emulating when I have the console and games sat there.

Games currently only supported via dial up which are online are:

Starlancer
Planet Ring
4x4 Evolution
Maximum Pool
Worms World Party*
Alien Front Online*

*servers will be back online soon details here - http://www.dcserv.org/?page_id=12

Thanks
