Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

It is kind of impossible just because I am never solo on my gaming, and all the other friends don't have any ms issues at all.

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

Bufferbloat is what you need to be aware of, when you have multiple devices downloading or streaming from your hub at the same time:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/17883

Run this test by selecting 'cable': http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

As @stormfury2 said, getting a 3rd party router with QoS is the fix for that. e.g. Asus RT-n66u and upwards. The Asus ac87u has more flexibility.

The second thing to be aware of is when you're uploading without the Vivid 200 Gamer package (you said you have Vivid 200), then you'll be subject to traffic management on the upstream. This means if you go over these thresholds then not only will your upload get slowed down, but your connection will be de-prioritised and your latency will increase: https://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy-thresholds.html

Remember that downloading or streaming netflix also uses a little bit of upload, which added to your upstream stream and your game traffic, depending on the quality you're using, may trigger traffic management. Something to consider.

That's like saying 5 friends all travel into work from different locations via different routes and it's impossible for one of them to have traffic jams or delays. You're ignoring all the factors that will be different between you and your friends. Like different routes, CDN's, etc.

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

Look I am just saying, every night that I do gaming I am playing duo queue so I am never solo. The idea is that with the VIVID 200 I can't do my gaming as it has crazy ping as soon as I have more than 2 users on my internet. #USINGWIFI. All my mates that are not with virgin don't have that kind of problem. Now I am expecting either to find a solution to fix the issue either to leave!?

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

Lod, unfortunately (and only in my opinion) I do not rate the VM supplied equipment, that is why if you are serious about gaming/Twitch streaming etc I would recommend using the SH3 in modem mode and rely on a third party high performance device to handle the routing/QoS and any other network function.

I would honestly do this with any supplied ISP equipment, such as BT's home hub. I do not know the specifics of the BT home hub so I couldn't accurate say whether it would support a gateway only type like the SH does or if you have to configure the traffic to go over a DMZ to your third party NAT device/router.

As typical with all VM connections the bandwidth delivered is greater and more stable (in most cases) but the latency, for whatever reason, is also higher than comparable VDSL connections (BT Infinity/Sky Fibre/Zen Internet etc).

I would also never use WiFi for gaming unless that was the only option available and definitely not the WiFi from a VM SuperHub.

If you feel that you're not getting the service you require then by all means use your feet and move to another ISP, that is entirely your choice.

Hopefully this helps with your decision making.

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

So overall, is the routers fault that all these issues are taking place!?

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

Pretty much.

If you're using the SH3, you might not be aware of the current firmware issue affecting Intel Puma 6 devices:

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

By the way I see your internet provider is VM as well, how comes you get 333.18Mbps download speed? Are you using the VM Gamer?

Result test: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/11711764

Will this Netgear do? : http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing-accessories/networking/network-routers-and-switches/routers/n...

Re: Amazing ping with VIVID 200

That Netgear router looks perfect for what you need. The description also states it works with cable modems.

Also 300mbps is achievable with HomeWorks, the step up from VIVID 200 Gamer.
