200-400 ping lag spikes - any help appreciated

Hello,

I am experiencing ping "spikes" (sometimes my ping will rise for a few seconds and then fall straight back down to the usual 40ms, sometimes it will stay at 400ms until I reset the hub) when gaming. I'm connected through a wired connection to the super hub, but I have wireless enabled which others use.

I've tried everything to my knowledge but the problem persists; if anybody who really knows their stuff could help me out it would be much appreciated.

P.s I've tried calling Virgin support twice and just been given the same old, "speeds are slow in your area currently", if being unable to game on a 50mb connection is considered acceptable to VM then that's crazy.

I will post anything that will help with diagnostics.

Thanks

Tom

Re: 200-400 ping lag spikes - any help appreciated

If you run cmd
ping -t 86.30.14.1
and then do a download or upload by speed test your ping will go higher if your getting a high ping just from idle or gaming and thats gaming without sending streaming of your game play or using a voice then its a problem and better if you can ping the game server or who your connecting to so that your checking beyond the VM gateway.

For best game play don't have any device downloading or uploading.

Your downstream power levels are too high and out of spec, seeing that offshore CS are of no help, it might be prudent to wait here a few days until a VM Forum team member picks up the thread. CS might have seen an utilisation fault in your area, the VM Forum Team will check for you.

Re: 200-400 ping lag spikes - any help appreciated

Hi Masterm4n,

Griffin is spot on here. Yuor downstream power levels are too high which will cause fluctuating speeds and latency as well as disconnections. We'll need to get a technician out to adjust this and I've just sent you a private message to arrange the best time.

To check your private messages just click the envelope at the top of the forum.

While checking your connection I also saw that there is a contention fault in the area under ticket F003603772. This will also cause slow speeds at peak times such as evenings and weekends and is due for review 06/04/16.
