That address is only for access via a web brower. For the application access you need the following. At this stage these will only work if you have an @virginmedia.com or @virgin.net address.
Your Name: (optional)
E-mail address: (your Virgin Media Mail address including @virginmedia.com or @virgin.net)
User Name: (your Virgin Media Mail address, including @virginmedia.com or @virgin.net)
Password: (your Virgin Media Mail password)
Remember password: (optional)
Incoming mail server (POP3): pop3.virginmedia.com , Port 995 and SSL enabled
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.virginmedia.com , Port 465 and SSL enabled
Leave messages on server option enabled
The outbound mail server settings are when you are connected via Wi-Fi to VirginMedia or any network that allows outbound mail access using the VM server.
Some mobile providers and wireless network providers (such as Openzone) force you to use that networks SMTP server so you wil have to check with network you are connect with
OMG thank you soooooooooooo much. My husband has been trying to set this up on my i phone for days. It took me seconds following your advice.

Use the actual full primary e-mail address for the mailbox
What happens when email has ntlworld.com address?
The settings are here http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&TIMEZONE...
However, until you are migrated to the Google platform the outbound settings will only work when you are connected via Wi-Fi on your Virgin Media home broadband connection.
If you are using 3G you will have to use the smtp server for your mobile provider
EDIT: and it's imap.ntlworld.com not imap4.ntlworld.com
I have exactly the same problem. Did you resolve ?
If so could you let me know how . I am going crazy trying to set up !
I have tried your suggested settings but still no luck.
I can sent but not receive. I get message ' the connection to the server failed '
Any other possibilities I can try that other users have had success with ?
