Sending E-mail from smartphone

I have been trying for some time to set up my Nokia smart phone to send email via my virgin media account. I can recieve email by POP and IMAP but sending always fails. Is there a block on sending mail from phones with an @ntlworld email address?

Hope someone has the answer!

Many thanks for the settings, but still no success in sending email.

Great service recieving, i guess i should check with Virgin that they allow email on the ntlworld.com server.

I was suggesting you use the virginmedia.com smtp server

The reason being that to send email off-network, you must use smtp authentication. smtp.ntlworld.com does not support authentication, so you can only use it via your home connection.

smtp.virginmedia.com does support authentication, works with all of the legacy email domains. You must be sure that you have selected smtp server authentication in your client, suing your full email address and password, with clear text (i.e. not secure password authentication)

Re: Sending E-mail from smartphone

try using:

smtp.virginmedia.com

port 465

SSL on

smtp server authentication ON (password, cleartext)

Re: Sending E-mail from smartphone

Sending is on the VirginMedia SMTP as per above:

>>

smtp.virginmedia.com

port 465

SSL on

smtp server authentication ON (password, cleartext)

<<

This all works fine on a laptop, whether you get it to work on a Smartphone is whether your Smartphone software allows you to access those ports on the software menu as if you are setting it up on a laptop. I couldn't as far as I could tell with my Windows HD2 so went back to my old method using BT's SMTP.... if you know someone on BT Broadband you get them to give you an email login and use the authorise process to register your self for sending emails from other peoples broadband - you can find the process documented on a Google - BT customer can email on other peoples networks traditionally whilst NTL customer couldn't traditionally. BT's process is much the same as the Virgin process of server authentication but isn't fussy about you having to set it up for a port on your Smartphone.

Re: Sending E-mail from smartphone

I think there is a wider problem as my virginmedia account was working fine on my phone until today - now it is saying that the account settings are incorrect and wont send any emails. I havent changed anything and when i check all the of the smtp settings match what the website says they should be!

the website says all sorts of things, not necessarily correct!

if these settings don't work, then possibly you have other password/username issues on the account, quite prevalent at the moment on @ntlworld accounts.

(If you are no longer a VM customer then you will also be having problems.)

Re: Sending E-mail from smartphone

Well my two pennies worth is if you can't access these

>>

port 465

SSL on

<<

on your Smartphone set up with the SMTP of Virginmedia.com then you aren't going to get it to work.

The rest works a dream on Vista.
