Hi
You don't say what VM equipment you have, judging from your post I am assuming you have a Modem and not a Virgin Superhub.
You also don't say which Zyxel model you have although if you go to their website they may have downloadable copies of the manual.
Basic steps for connecting Router to Modem are
1. Plug cable from modem to WAN port of Zyxel router.
2. Second ethernet cable runs from any of the numbered ports to your PC
3. Power Modem off and then back on.
4. Power Router on.
5 Open Web page and navigate to 192.168.1.1 Default user is left blank and default password is 1234
Configure Wireless settings etc to suit your needs.
If you cannot get into the router using default username/password you may need to do a factory reset
power the router down hold in the reset button while powering it back up and keep the button held for a further 15 seconds.

Edit - Reading your post again it seems you already have a Wired router - unless you have a need for 2 routers I would take the Realtek out of the network altogether otherwise you will be making the network more complex than it needs to be.
I don't work for Virgin - All opinions are my own creative thought.
