Not sure if this is universal however my issue with the smpt server appears to have been resolved. Hopefully VM have fixed the problem.
Fingers crossed.

No it isn't universal. I am still seeing the same problem and 421 Service not available error with SMTP.

Hi drthomas,
I have checked the details in the fault ticket and this states that the issue is now resolved.
Could you please retest and reply with the full error message given so we can investigate this further.

I'm having the same problem, it's been like it for a few days that I know of, I have had no problems before with smtp.ntlworld.com using port 25, I've tried changing to smtp.virginmedia.com on Port 25 and also on Port 465 (and with/without SSL) and no such joy, the same error message (obviously the smtp address, port and SSL changes depending what I'm currently trying):
An unknown error has occurred.
Server: 'smtp.virginmedia.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x80070057
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 465
Secure(SSL): Yes
Please advise

Hi,
I am on vacation in Dubai and had all the above (same except for IP address) error messages, able to receive email but not send. Used the change in smtp to virginmedia from ntlworld and had success.
Using Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail everything worked OK whilst in UK but as soon as I tried to use in Dubai the error appeared. Yet to find out if I will have to change it back when I get back to the UK ![]()

Replace 'smpt' with 'smtp' and you should find it works. Use port 465.
It is often little typos like that that cause hours of frustration!
