I have an old email address with ntlworld. It is still active as I have an email inbox set up on my mac mini to receive them. However I can't log into the account online. Why is this? It says it doesn't recognise my username
This often evidence that the email address is in the process of being closed down. You say it is an old ntlworld address - do you have a current Virgin Media broadband account to which this particular email address is attached? VM and their legacy email addresses are supposed to close down 90 days after you cease to be a broadband customer.

I still have virgin broadband - I never ended my contract. Seems strange that he account is still active - still get emails to the address locally on my computer - but can't access them online via webmail as it doesn't recognise account...
Might it also be that you haven't accessed the address in the last 90 days. VM close these addresses down and delete them after 150 days. If that isn't the case and you have been in to it wait here. Sounds like a server error that the Forum Team can investigate for you.
