If an email app/client are you allowing the device to set up the account itself or are you setting it up manually?
If automatic then it may be entering the details incorrectly so try manually setting up the account.
Imap.virginmedia.com SSL on/ticked Port 993 or pop3.virginmedia.com SSL on/ticked Port 995 smtp.virginmedia.com SSL on/ticked Port 465 username is your full email address Password is your email account password
