I assume the software is similar to the Samsung galaxy tab 2 in which case:
Click on the email app and select add account, manual setup.
The outgoing settings are smtp.virginmedia.com, security type SSL and port 465 with a tick in Require sign-in
The incoming settings are IMAP server: imap.virginmedia.com Security type SSL Port 993. Leave imap path prefix blank
Make sure you use your full ntlworld email address as the user name including the @ntlworld.com bit.

no comes up authentication failed when going through the incoming settings
Have you selected the manual settings options? Try putting the phone in offline (Flight) mode and then try.

The information Graham_A has provided should indeed get the mails working for you, I notice that you said you get the failed authentication message on recieving mails. This may be a setting in your ntlworld account that will need changing.
Please log into your webmail on virginmedia.com, then go to settings (top right of the page), from here click on "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" link in the middle of the page, and ensure that IMAP is enabled.
Then complete the process that Graham_A has described.
Let me know how this goes for you

sorry the issue is still not resolved, got some further bits of info for you.
Log into myvirginmedia and change your password, this will resync the details with the servers (you can change it back again if your email password is secure) try this.
I use a Iphone, and a ntlworld account, now how this works is beyond me, but I am using the settings for ntlworld, but in my outgoing mail server I deleted my email address and password, but left the port in place. And was able to send mail - worth giving a go if resetting your password does not work
