Does imap.blueyonder.co.uk (from Mozilla ISPDB) work instead of imap4.blueyonder.co.uk (from Virgin Media Site)?
Both will work.

Does imap.virgin.net (from Mozilla ISPDB) work instead of imap4.virgin.net (from Virgin Media Site)?
only imap4.virgin.net works.  imap.virgin.net does not resolve to a hostname.

Does pop3.virgin.net (from Mozilla ISPDB) work instead of pop.virgin.net (from Virgin Media Site)?
Only pop.virgin.net will work

If the server setting imap.blueyonder.co.uk | imap.virgin.net | pop.virgin.net do not work let me know here so i can get them changed

The autoconfig file on Mozilla ISP DB uses for example imap.%EMAILDOMAIN% for all domains (virginmedia.com/virgin.net/ntlworld.com/blueyonder.co.uk) but blueyonder and virgin.net uses IMAP server setting starting with imap4 not imap

blueyonder.co.uk SHOULD be redirecting but isn't, instead the connection is timing out and then being retried

Why is this affecting the auto setup?

Because before it searches the ISPDB Thunderbird is first searching the actual domain for the setup files.  In the case of ntlworld.com and virgin.net this is redirected to the virginmedia.com domain and ultimately throws a 404 error, so thunderbird quickly moves on to the next part of the lookup which is the ISPDB.

In the case of blueyonder because it's timing out the check is tried again before moving on.  This is slowing down the auto configuration.

@ForumTeam Would you guys look at why blueyonder.co.uk isn't redirecting properly?

Re: autoconfig settings for Thunderbird have been added to the ISPDB.

These are the autoconfig setting retrieved when using "Mail account setup". (The same settings from the documentation links below.)

IMAP, imap.virginmedia.com, SSL
POP3, pop3.virginmedia.com, SSL
SMTP, smtp.virginmedia.com, SSL

IMAP, imap.ntlworld.com, SSL
POP3, pop3.ntlworld.com, SSL
SMTP, smtp.ntlworld.com, SSL

IMAP, imap4.virgin.net, SSL
POP3, pop.virgin.net, SSL
SMTP, smtp.virgin.net, SSL

IMAP, imap4.blueyonder.co.uk, SSL
POP3, pop3.blueyonder.co.uk, SSL
SMTP, smtp.blueyonder.co.uk, SSL

Documentation urls/links from autoconfig file:

NOTE: if you have configuration file(s) in your isp folder (example: thunderbird-installation-folder\isp\virginmedia.com.xml) thunderbird will check them first before checking the ISPDB online.

Check Mozilla ISP DB autoconfig settings for Thunderbird

Error in my last post.

I've rechecked the settings on the Mozilla ISP DB. (see below | look for "|*|" on settings for virgin.net and blueyonder.co.uk )

autoconfig from Mozilla ISP DB Settings on Virgin Media site:
=======================================================================================================
IMAP: imap.virginmedia.com, 993, SSL, Normal Password | | IMAP: imap.virginmedia.com, 993, SSL, Normal Password

Can anyone check the Mozilla ISP DB settings for blueyonder.co.uk and virgin.net to make sure they are working?

Re: Check Mozilla ISP DB autoconfig settings for Thunderbird

Hi

Virginmedia settings are found very quickly.  Blueyonder settings are also found but there is a long delay before it finds them.  before it finds them.  This suggests something's not quite right somewhere.

Re: Check Mozilla ISP DB autoconfig settings for Thunderbird

Hi @38956 and @ravenstar68

Thanks for all your posts on this and your efforts to flag this to usSmiley Happy

You've mentioned that this is fixed but Is the issue still present with blueyonder as that appears to be what you're suggesting on your last post. I've tested this out here and replicated the redirect issue on several different browsers not just Firefox. All other clients seem to have no issues with auto configuration so I'm wondering if this issue is simply a problem with Thunderbird as this seemed to run slow when I tried to setup a test account using the auto configuration settings.

Re: Check Mozilla ISP DB autoconfig settings for Thunderbird

Hi Stephen

Yes the problem still exists with blueyonder.

To reiterate.

Put virgin.net into the address bar of a browser - you get virginmedia.com
Put ntlworld.com into the address bar of a browser you get virginmedia.com
Put blueyonder.co.uk into the address bar of a browser and you get connection timed out.

Note it's not a DNS issue. If there is supposed to be a server listening at blueyonder.co.uk and redirecting to virginmedia.com then it's not.

C:\Users\timdu>tracert blueyonder.co.uk

Tracing route to blueyonder.co.uk [92.238.96.13]

So

Try auto configuring an ntlworld.com , virgin.net , and virginmedia.com address and we swiftly get a 404 error.  Which is what we want if the file is not on Virgin's own servers.  Autoconfiguration quickly moves onto checking the ISPDB - we got offered the settings very quickly.

Try the same with blueyonder.co.uk and the server doesn't respond.  Thunderbird has to wait until the server times out - then for good measure it tries again and has to wait again.  Finally it moves on to the ISPDB - but the time out means that instead of taking a second or two to move on it takes over a minute before it moves on to the ISPDB - once it does it retreives the correct settings.

To sum up - Fix the problem with blueyonder.co.uk not responding and you'll fix the auto configuration issue.
