WINDOWS LIVE MAIL EMAIL ACCOUNT 'TERMINATES THE CONNECTION'

Hey there.

I wonder if anyone can help me?

For the past 3 weeks, I've had problems with my email.

I use Windows Live Mail on a desktop computer with Windows 7.  When I click on Send\Receive, a popup box appears, telling me the connection is terminated.  The exact message is:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Blueyonder.co (XXXXXXX) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Server Response: +OK 36369 octets
Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

This is very annoying, and I'm not sure if all my emails are getting through.

Does anyone know what this means, and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Re: WINDOWS LIVE MAIL EMAIL ACCOUNT 'TERMINATES THE CONNECTION'

Looks like you are using old port numbers.  Try these settings for POP3, just ignore the IMAP section.

Thankyou Dave, but it hasn't made any difference.

I still get the same popup error message.

Re: WINDOWS LIVE MAIL EMAIL ACCOUNT 'TERMINATES THE CONNECTION'

Have you tried deleting the account and adding it back again?

I had an email from them saying I had to delete the account and add it back if using Outlook 2013/2016 otherwise it would stop working. I know you're not using either of these, but just wondered if it might be a similar issue?

This is really frustrating. I have something to suggest.

Please check that you can receive and send OK in VM web mail. Please also ensure that when you are looking at your e-mail in VM web mail there is nothing stuck in your outbox that hasn't sent. If there is then you should delete it/them (they will be lost, however).  The try again in WLM.

This error is normally associated with a temporary fault at VM's end but there is nothing known at the moment affecting the servers that support e-mail clients like yours. Web mail is a bit up the spout but that should not be relevant here.

I do not work for VM. The advice I give is based on my best understanding of VM policy and practice. You rely on it at your own risk.

Re: WINDOWS LIVE MAIL EMAIL ACCOUNT 'TERMINATES THE CONNECTION'

@Frodo

There is a known issue with POP3 whereby if there is a malformed mail on the server, it can stall the POP3 download with the above error.  If this happens you will find that mail clients will download mail up to the problem mail and then stall and eventually give up.

If this is the case you may find that your client has downloaded several copies of the good mails that it found before encountering the problem mail.

The fix is to log in via webmail and identify the problem mail and delete it.

Check the last good mail that was downloaded and use that as the guide to find the problem mail.

And I'll remember that for the next time I see this type of error. Thanks @ravenstar68 - it was what I was groping for in my reply. But it is foggy out today and I missed it.
