I'm now trying to use Thunderbird 8 - previously I've been using MS Outlook fine. I've added by POP account, but it says there are no messages - logged in via the browser interface tells me that yes, there are. Has anyone used TB 8 with virgin email?

you could log into webmail/settings/'forwarding and POP/IMAP' and reset the POP settings to 'all mail even if already downloaded' or similar words. Then save&exit. Also make sure your POP settings are correct, especially the port number (995) and SSL (on/enabled). These are different from default, so T/bird will not select them by itself.
