For the last 2 days i am intermittantly being prompted to enter the POP3 password when sending mail.

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

Hello NickBatch

Sorry you are being prompted for the password it does sound most annoying. What devices do you have set up, is it happening on all of them? You mentioned it happening when you were sending so is it definitely the POP3 password being asked for or the SMTP one? I only ask as some devices have problems displaying SMTP login or sending rate errors and resort to just asking for the password.

Thanks

Nicola

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

Hello Nicola,

I am using a Windows 10 home laptop with Outlook from Office 365.

I have just sent a test mail and the problem is still occurring.  The mails do eventually go but it is most frustrating for the delay & the password prompt to keep popping up.

I have just tested send with my Galaxy S6 & Ipad and both failed! So problem is a more than a pop3 problem.  Webmail worked though. Then after about 10 minutes all the mails were sent - PC, phone & Ipad. Very odd.

I did change my primary account password last weekend. I did update this change on all the devices and wonder if this is the problem within the VM servers where the passwords may not have propagated through.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Nick

When the mails don't send, are you sending over home network or from elsewhere?

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

HI,

Laptop, ipad & phone all over local home network.  Tried phone with wifi disabled and got a Delivery Status Notification with Tranaction Failed.

Nick

PS after several hours of not sending mails now sent including the phone mail sent with wifi disabled.

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

Talked to 1st line support who reset my password.

Initial tests looking promising.

A bit odd this - maybe changing the password online does not change it everywhere.

Will report back.

It that were the case I would expect the password to not work at all, not only work intermittently.

I'm wondering what the server is sending back when the password fails?

Would you be willing to try turning on loggging in Outlook the next time you get an error and then resend so you can look at the SMTP logs?

Logging can be turned on by going clicking FIle->Options then in advanced click Enable troubleshooting logging (requires restarting outlook).

Restart Outlook and you'll get a warning that logging is turned on.  Ignore the warning for now - this is what we want.

Send a message using the affected account then have a look for the following file

%TEMP%\Outlook Logging\OPMLog.log

Here's a successful email send

We only need the second Authentication results line which is the second line in red to look at if the password fails.  In my case it was

<rx> 235 ... authentication succeeded - which is what we should see.  However if you get something else.  Then seeing what is is would prove helpful.

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

Will do. Although whatever 1st line support did seems to have done the trick.

Thanks

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittanty requesting password

Status so far. Yesterday had the intermittant mail send problem but did not record a log. Today, more time on hand, thought I would create an Oulook diagnostic log. Guess what - mail send has worked all day.

No idea what's going on.

Re: Sending mail using pop3 intermittently requesting password

Me too. This has started today and either the pop3 or stmp password request dialogue box keeps appearing every 45 seconds. The password is automatically populated in the field. I keep clicking "save this password" but it is highly irritating and appears to be making my email not work in Outlook anymore. Or rather, it seems random what can and can't be received and sent. I have not changed anything.

HELP!
