Reading email in mobile stops download to computer

If I read my email on my mobile using POP3, when I next connect using a mail client on my Mac the message doesn't get downloaded, presumably because it's seen as having already been read. The mail is still there - I can see it in webmail - but I prefer to use a mail client and keep a local copy. Equally, I could use a web client on my phone but it's clunky and uses more of my data allowance as it has to download the headers of all the messages on the first page each time rather than just new messages.

Does anyone know of any settings to handle this?

Phone: HTC Wildfire using Mail and leaving a copy on the server.

Computer: iMac using Mail and set to delete the server copy on download

Thanks

Re: Reading email in mobile stops download to computer

Or better still, use the more modern IMAP !

It mirrors emails and folders across ALL devices. So move something on computer from Inbox to My Folder, it will show on mobile My Folder within seconds.

I just don't know why people waste their time using the old POP system as normal users, you have 7+GB and growing of online server storage for your emails with Gmail through VM now — use it and keep all your emails forever!

(yes, I do know sometimes POP is better for specialist functions, but you can still drag emails off the server folders and onto your computer ANYTIME you want anyway.)
