As I said in the original post I did create a Virginmedia email account which also does not work.

Personally I wouldn't have messed around with the hotfix fist - I'd have tried just setting SSL and 587 and then see what happens.

Understand that TLS and SSL are essentially the same thing.  It's just after SSL 3.0 it underwent a name change to TLS 1.0  The reason - because the name SSL is still owned by Netscape and by extension AOL, so by using the TLS name once it was made open source they avoid a repeat of the Compuserve GIF issue.

Microsoft's labelling in later versions of Outlook is actually not semantically correct.

Thunderbird does a better job of labelling the options

Cant send emails from any account

Just moved from TalkTalk to Virgin broadband.

Now I can't send emails but I can receive  them, all the email settings have been used for many years.

I switched back to TalkTalk & I could send emails again!!!

I perhaps would not been surprised if it affected TalkTalk email account but it should not affect gmail.

Created Virgin email account, still could not send emails.

Sending emails is important, need it fixed even if it means going back to TalkTalk.

Any suggestions?

If your using (S)Talk (S)Talks mail servers to send mail then you must be connected to there service.

Forgive me - I've made a dogs breakfast of moving your thread to the right part of the Forum. I'll make amends by giving you a decent reply.

Provided TT let you you can continue to use your TT e-mail address with VM. It is easy but you must observe a simple rule. Your e-mail software must be set up to use TT's settings and not anything related to VM. This is because TT have started to use a tech thing to protect the identity of their servers.

This is the advice for use of e-mail clients

TT's settings are here:

You'll need to use the drop down list to get the SMTP and POP/IMAP settings depending on your TT domain and what protocol you prefer to use for collecting mail

You can also run your VM address side by side within the same e-mail client as a separate address. The VM settings are easy - there is only one set of them and they are here:

If you prefer to use VM's web mail you can add your TT address to that so you can see all your mail in one go. It's not necessarily guaranteed to work:

Checked that the TT settings are correct & they were, still does not work.

Gmail does not work on VM but does on TT.

I have not tested VM on TT.

I am using Outlook 2003 & I have been using it that long!

Interestingly TT won’t send items in the Outbox once they have failed via VM, I have to do a quick copy & paste to create new ones.

What SMTP servers are you using? And check that you are authenticating your sends properly using the appropriate e-mail addresses and passwords - for TT use your TT address and password and for VM use your VM password and address. 

Can you please check if your VM address works on web mail.

My wife's Gmail works wonderfully through VM using the GMail server settings.

Must be using correct SMTP settings for TT & Gmail as they work when using TT broadband.

VM email works when using the web.

TT & Gmail both work using the web interface.

Don't punish me for fouling up the move of your posts to this part of the Forum. Please tell me what actual SMTP settings you are using. Are you seeing any error messages when the sends fail? What are they? We need all the clues we can get.

The error message means what it says. For your tiscali address the SMTP server should be 465 or 587 with TLS or SSL on and authentication set using your tiscali address. Or it won't work on non TT servers.
