HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

Morning all. I am a newbie here and so I hope somebody can help.

I tried the on-line chat with Virgin and as I have seen from others responses, they were all but useless!

I have also looked on the previous posts under this problem and I seem to have done all that is needed to rectify the problem but still no good.

I use a hosting company (Fasthosts) for my emails and everything was all fine and I could send emails to a contact I have via Hotmail until the August Bank Holiday weekend. On the Friday I was emailing fine. I organised a Festival over the weekend and so didn't use my laptop and on the Tuesday I tried to send an email, it bounced back and I have had no joy since trying to send to any Hotmail accounts.

I have used other email addresses using the same hosting company and I have with the same issues, which to me sounded like a hosting issue. I have spoken with their technical team and have tried all of their requests and they have now said it is due to Virgin being blacklisted.

Email settings are all SSL, ports are 993 and 465, I have tried everything I am supposed to...

Can somebody help please? What do I need to do next?

Many thanks in advance, a very frustrated Virgin user... Steve

Re: HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

It's me again... just to check something else, I also work for other companies and so have used their webmail services to send to the Hotmail address... and they bounce back too. So it's not the hosting. Must be the ISP!

Please help!

Re: HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

Posting the actual bounce message would be useful.  Just obscure the first part of any email address.

When you send are you using Virgin's smtp servers or fasthost's?

Re: HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

Thanks for getting back Ravenstar... I see you are the man/woman in the know!

I have tried from email addresses hosted via Fasthosts, using livemail servers.
I have tried from other email address also hosted by Facsthosts, using the actual domain names and so cannot tell what servers
I have also tried webmail options of other clients I use and have the same thing.

Do you mean this part of the bounceback?

Right where to begin.

Blocklists are used to detect mail coming directly from "undesirable sources" so a inbound mail server will check the IP address that's connecting to it, rather than the IP address of the original sender.  So the IP address in red is the one that's being rejected by the mail server.

I've confirmed from your other post that the FQDN and SMTP banner are thus:

> vps268710.ovh.net
Server:  cache1.service.virginmedia.net
Address:  194.168.4.100

Non-authoritative answer:
vps268710.ovh.net       internet address = 164.132.43.56

But we have a problem - when I look up the PTR record for the IP address, I don't get the FQDN of the mail server

> set type=ptr
> 164.132.43.56
Server:  cache1.service.virginmedia.net
Address:  194.168.4.100

Non-authoritative answer:
56.43.132.164.in-addr.arpa      name = 56.ip-164-132-43.eu

We get a generic FQDN name instead.

This has lead to the address being listed on the RATs NoPtr blacklist

http://www.spamrats.com/bl?164.132.43.56

Which is why hotmail is bouncing it.

Nothing to do with Virgin at all.

Ravenstar68

Edit - BTW If you sent a mail to a Virginmedia email address you'd most likely get a bounce for exactly the same reason.

Re: HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

Many thanks for getting back and unfortunately you lost me at hello on that email!

I am vaguely technical and yet that was way over my head.

As I know the famous old saying of 'I didn't touch it, the computer must have changed it' because I spend hours trying to sort out issues with the family's IT problems, I don't want to say this but I seriously have not changed anything at all.

I had emailed this guy for months back and forth, came back after the Bank Holiday weekend and it was blocked!

So how can I correct this? Or who do I need to chase up next so I can email this guy again?

Any help and guidance would be appreciated... in slightly less techy instructions too if I can be a pain.

Thank you!

Re: HOTMAIL REJECTING EMAILS - even though I changed nothing!

The computer's changed nothing.

Mail servers should follow a fixed convention.  They announce themselves with their actual Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)
e.g. EHLO mail1.example.com.  The inbound server also notes the IP address e.g. 1.2.3.4

In the first instance if I look up the IP address of the server name I should get

mail1.example.com = 1.2.3.4

So far so good.  Now if I do the reverse and look up the name linked to the address 1.2.3.4 I should get

1.2.3.4 = mail1.example.com

So essentially what I did the same thing with your email server and what I got was this.

vps268710.ovh.net = 164.132.43.56
but
164.132.43.56 = 56.ip-164-132-43.eu

This is the root of the problem.  You need to go back to your email host and show them this.  Once they've amended the reverse DNS lookup they then need to remove the entry from SpamRAT's  but there's no point in removing it until the reverse DNS is sorted as SpamRAT's will just list it again for the same reason.
