Forum registration email delayed by lithium.com servers

Finally got to register!

I couldn't verify email for this forum because I wasn't receiving the verification email.  Looking at the email headers once they were finally received, it turns out these were held up by about 2.5 hours, by the 'lithium.com' mail servers before being delivered to my mail servers.  Lithium.com seems to be the internal spam filters and forum servers operated for Virgin to run this community forum.

Please can a mod get these verification emails whitelisted?  I can't be the first person to experience this.  It wasn't a great start!

Re: Forum registration email delayed by lithium.com servers

In all probability, your confirmation email was held on Lithium Technologies servers whilst it tried / retried  to deliver to Virgin Media's servers.

Re: Forum registration email delayed by lithium.com servers

Is the email address the confirmation was sent to a Virgin Media Email address?

Re: Forum registration email delayed by lithium.com servers

No,

It's an external address.hosted with 1and1.

From the headers below, you can see it was held between smtp2.lithium.com and ams1papp06.am.lithium.com for 2 hours and 26 minutes before being delivered to mx.kundenserver.de (which is a 1and1 mailserver)

Received: from smtp2.lithium.com ([46.19.168.11]) by mx.kundenserver.de (mxeue006 [212.227.15.41]) with ESMTP (Nemesis) id 0LfyiF-1c3l5d2mCZ-00pcC9 for <************>; Wed, 08 Feb 2017 15:23:54 +0100

Received: from ams1papp06.am.lithium.com (am-lb-VIP-VLAN90.am.lithium.com [10.50.90.6]) by smtp2.lithium.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C413100934 for <**********>; Wed, 8 Feb 2017 12:57:58 +0100 (CET)

Re: Forum registration email delayed by lithium.com servers

Delays like this are usually down to the recipient mailserver rather than the sending one.

smtp servers will always try to pass on a mail straight away.  However sometimes a receiving mail server doesn't accept it either

1. Due to a server fault.
2. Due to Graylisting.

In either case what happens is that the sending server queues the mail and tries redelivering it at increasing intervals until either.

1. The receiving server responds accepts or clearly rejects the mail with a 5xx error
2. The retry message timeout expires (this can be hours, but more commonly days later).

Because each header is only added when a server accepts a mail, it makes it look as if the problem is the sending side when it's not.

Yes, you're absolutely right.  Looking again, could be delayed by 1and1 receiving.
