Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

Hi,

I am receiving Virgin Media mail on my PC which is also transferred to my Android smartphone (S4 Mini). I would like to be able to delete emails on my phone without deleting them on my PC. Ho do I do this please?

Re: Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

Hello JimboX

Interesting problem, one way perhaps to consider is to use POP3 on the phone rather than IMAP for the incoming mail server as this will not communicate any email deletions it will simply download new emails to the phone. Setting may be found here Email settings for addresses ending in @blueyonder.co.uk

Thank you

Nicola

Re: Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

Hallo Nicola,

Thanks for showing an interest in my problem. I wasn't aware that I was using IMAP for the incoming mail server on my phone. Only problem now is how do I change this on my phone? Sorry to say I'm not too conversant with technology so if you could lay out a wordy explanation for me I can have a go at it.

Many thanks for your help - it's really appreciated.

Re: Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

 Hi JimboX,

Nicola's not in until Wednesday so hope you don't mind me offering a reply.  I suspect that you can't simply switch from IMAP to POP and therefore adding a new account would be the best way forward.

However you may not be able to add an account you already have, in which case deleting and re-setting up the email from scratch may be the only option. My concern with that would be the possibility of losing any emails currently stored on your phone so please make sure that anything you wish to keep is backed up on your pc.

To attempt to add your email address as POP:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Add account under the Accounts tab.
  4. Select Email.
  5. Type your Email address.
  6. Type your Password.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Select the type of account > POP
  9. Type your Username > your full email address.
  10. Type your Password.
  11. Type your POP3 or server name > pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
  12. Select the Security type. Typically this should be set to None.
  13. Tap Next.
  14. Type the SMTP server > smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
  15. Select the Security type. Typically this should be set to None.
  16. Type the Port > 995
  17. Tap Next.
  18. Set your personal preferences and tap Next.
  19. Give this account a name.
  20. Type Your name.
  21. Tap Done.

That should work for you, but if you require any further support please let us know.

Best wishes Smiley Happy

Re: Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

As an aside I do things the other way around.

I have pop3 on my PC so that I can keep all my emails and archive them.

My pc is set to delete emails off the server after 90 days to stop the server getting clogged up, but also to allow my phone which is using Imap 90 days worth of history.

If I deleted email on the phone then it wouldn't matter to the pc as it already has a local copy.

In this case pop3 on the phone may be the best solution, however check to make sure that it isn't set to automatically delete emails off the server once it gets them.

Re: Deleting emails on phone but not on PC

Please note it makes not a blind bit of difference when using VM mail as to what server settings POP3 has on the device. They won't work. Read this:

I do not work for VM. The advice I give is based on my best understanding of VM policy and practice. You rely on it at your own risk.
