Configuring virgin.net email on Outlook and iPhone - emails only appear on first device switched on

Please can anyone help as I've never been able to setup my virgin.net e-mails to work on both outlook and iphone.  Any e-mails received only download to the first computer that is switched on.  They are then not available for the other computer.

All I want to be able to do is download messages on my iphone and read / reply to them.  If I delete them from my iphone then I don't want them downloaded onto Outlook.  However if I don't delete them from my iphone, I want them downloaded to outlook.

I thought this would be quite straightforward but I simply cannot get it to work.

On my PC (Outlook 2003) I am using the following settings:

Server Information:

Incoming mail server:  pop.virgin.net

Outgoing mail server:  smtp.virgin.net

Outgoing server:

My outgoing server (SMTP) required authentication:  ENABLED

Use same settings as my incoming mail server:  SELECTED

Advanced:

  Incoming server (POP3):  995

This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) - ENABLED

  Outgoing server (SMTP):  465

This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) - ENABLED

On my iphone I have the following settings:

Incoming mail server:  pop.virgin.net

Outgoing mail server:  smtp.virgin.net

Advanced:

Incoming settings:  Use SSL - ON

  Authentication:       Password

Delete from server:  When removed from inbox

  Server port:             995

My webmail settings are:  POP in enabled

When messages are accessed with POP - keep Virgin Media Mail's copy in the inbox

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

use IMAP instead of POP on the iPhone. That avoids the problem of having two pop clients on the same account, and will also mean that deletions on the iPhone will copy to the server and hence not be available to download to POP client.

Re: Configuring virgin.net email on Outlook and iPhone - emails only appear on first device switched

Thanks for your reply but I'm having problems trying to setup my iphone with the IMAP settings.

In the incoming mail server options I enter:

Host name:  imap.virginmedia.com  or  imap4.virgin.net

User name:  my e-mail address (ending in @virgin.net)

Use SSL:  ON

Authentication:  Password

Server Port:  993

However when it tries to authenticate I get an error message "The POP server imap@virginmedia.com is not responding."

I can't seem to find an option on the iphone to setup the e-mail account as imap instead of POP?  Have I missed something obvious?

that could be because there is no such thing as imap@virginmedia.com (or it could just be your typo above?). The server is imap.virginmedia.com

Re: Configuring virgin.net email on Outlook and iPhone - emails only appear on first device switched

Sorry that was my typo in the error message.  I definitely entered imap.virginmedia.com in the incoming mail server settings, the error message was "The POP server "imap.virginmedia.com"  is not responding.

My iphone is connected to the internet and working so have ruled that out as a problem.

other things to try:

  1. ensure IMAP is enabled in webmail/settings/'forwarding and POP/IMAP'
  2. reset the password (via My VM), observing http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&TIMEZONE...

also be sure your username is your entire email address, not just the part before the @

Re: Configuring virgin.net email on Outlook and iPhone - emails only appear on first device switched

Thanks again, have enabled IMAP on webmail and changed my password however it still hasn't made any difference.  I get the same error in the iphone.

I've also ensured I'm using my full e-mail address as the user name.

hmmm?

so double check:

  • server = imap.virginmedia.com
  • port = 993
  • SSL = On/enabled
  • authentication = password (no typos, not forgetting to use the updated password in the client)
  • user name = full @virgin.net email address

the phone has a data or wifi connection

I'm being thick, the answer is in your previous post::

""The POP server "imap.virginmedia.com"  is not responding."

You have configured the POP option with the IMAP server. Better to delete and start over, ensuring you go down the IMAP route from the get-go.

Re: Configuring virgin.net email on Outlook and iPhone - emails only appear on first device switched

Yes have double checked the settings.

Have also tried starting from scratch on iphone by adding account however ir does not give me the option to choose POP or imap?

On the iphone I do the following:

Add account

Select other

Add mail account

Enter name, address (e-mail address), password, description

Click next

The account it added

Incoming mail server defaults to mail.virgin.net and username - which I then change to imap settings.
