Can't connect email to Outlook.live.com

Hi,

 

I have an email address ending ntlworld.com. Problem came out of the blue about 2 months ago. Everything was working fine until then.

 

Using the recommended settings on outlook.live.com:

Outgoing (SMTP) server: smtp.ntlworld.com

Outgoing server port: 465

Authentication: Basic ( I feel this may be the problem as I think it should be password however the only options are basic or SPA )

Encryption: SSL

Keep getting the error:

Failed to authenticate to the Server 'smtp.ntlworld.com' Port '465'. Please verify your credentials.

Have read many posts suggesting trying the following of which none work either:

smtp.virginmedia.com

smtp.virgin.net

smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

Have you tried SPA authentication as this seems to be password related?

Nooooooooooo!!!!!

I don't know if the OP has the old Outlook.com interface, but for authentication types I get

Basic - Which is clear text username and passwords. - Which is the correct one
NTLM - Which utilises a different password mechanism.

Their options are Basic or SPA, as the OP didn't say whether they'd tried the SPA option I thought I'd see if they had. If what I suggested was incorrect then hopefully they'll reply with an update. Smiley Happy

Yes I have tried the SPA option but I knew it wouldn't work.

 

Interface I'm using:

Windows 10 Internet Explorer (latest)

It is not as if we haven't had this or a similar problem before when VM had to do a lot of work to ensure that Outlook's servers could communicate properly with those of VM. That was a couple of months ago and the issue went away.

It would be helpful to know from the OP what Outlook interface he is seeing. Microsoft are in the process of upgrading Outlook.com to a new web based interface for all their domains - like Hotmail - with new protocols.

The way to tell is to look at the banner on top of the display. If it says "Outlook Email" it is the new interface. If it says Outlook.com it is the old interface. So tell us please.

The next thing I want to know is whether the ntlworld address is still live. If VM addresses are not DIRECTLY accessed for 90 days they are suspended and deleted after 60 days. So would the OP please tell us whether the address is working properly in VM web mail? 

Once we have this we'll be able to advise further. I suspect VM will need to look at this one anyway. There could be a simple fault in the OP's  VM mail box.
