I cannot open attachments in any browser. Message says file corrupted for both word and excel.

I can download to a file and open the file ok.

I can open the attachment in a browser using Hotmail which suggests that it is Virgin Mail that is at fault. I have Mac and Office for Macs.

Re: Attachments

Intriguing results here using Google Chrome.

Preview - Previews file in mail app.
Open in Browser - Downloads a version of the file instead of previewing it in the browser. - However the download is evidently not a true .docx file  And shows as corrupt in Word.
Download - Downloads the file proper - This version opens properly in Word as expected.

@ForumTeam - Can you ask Liberty Global to take a look.

Re: Attachments

Neither Preview or Open in Browser work for me either; oddly the latter believes itself to be a zip archive and I would not be surprised if that is true of the prior. Download works okay. AFAICS, unnecessary conversion of attachments is occurring in webmail, for example, a simple text file with the extension .docx and containing the text Test text is converted to Test text <br> for Open in Browser and, probably, Preview.

Re: Attachments

As Virgin email has been so very very poor recently, I have been using my iphone for emails and surprise, surprise, the attachments open easily.

They still do not open properly on my Mac desktop.

Re: Attachments

Hello Johnzbird et.al

Sorry it is taking a while but I just wanted to let you know we are aware and still investigating this problem. As 用心棒 mentioned it looks to be zipped up MS .*x files such as docx pptx xlsx etc. Once we hear more we will let you know.

Thank you for your patience

Re: Attachments

@Nicola_C

docx isn't actually a zipped format.  It's just that in later versions of Word Microsoft switched to an XML based Document standard as opposed to the original .doc and .xls files - Hence the (x being added to the extension)

Interestingly if I try a .jpg image I do get the expected behaviour from the file.

Preview - Previews image in mail app
Open in Browser - Opens new browser tab and displays image.
Download - Downloads the image.

If I save a Word Document out as the old style .doc format  (Word 97 - Word 2003) I get the following behaviour.

Preview - Previews file
Open In browser - Downloads file, File is viewable in Word.
Download - Downloads file, file is viewable in Word.

If I save the same Document out in .docx format (Word 2007 and above) I get the previous behaviour

Preview - Previews File
Open in Browser - Downloads file - Word advises file is corrupt
Download - Downloads file file is viewable in Word.

The problem appears to be the inbuilt document viewer as the Open in Browser option for the jpg uses a specific URL

https://mail2.virginmedia.com/appsuite/api/mail/image001.jpg?action=attachment&folder=default0%2FINB...

Note to mods - please leave the url intact.  Unless there is an appropriate cookie in the browser the link will not access the attachment.  So I'm posting the full url as evidence.

So there's evidently an issue with the document viewer and certain file types.

Tim

Re: Attachments

Hello Tim

Interesting, I wonder if the docx is a container that behaves like a zipped file so can be unzipped, perhaps MS used that off the shelf technology eg:-

>unzip test.docx
Archive:  test.docx
  inflating: [Content_Types].xml
  inflating: _rels/.rels
  inflating: word/_rels/document.xml.rels
  inflating: word/document.xml
  inflating: word/theme/theme1.xml
  inflating: docProps/core.xml
  inflating: docProps/app.xml
  inflating: docProps/meta.xml

as you say containing the xml files. I tried jpg as well and had the same results, pptx fails btw. I take you point about it possibly being the inbuilt doc viewer however if that is not present the browser offers the option to save and one would think that should still be working, something is corrupting it as they will not even unzip.
