A long lost Ntlworld account

Hi Mods Smiley Happy

I had an account with Ntlworld approx 14 years ago. I moved out of that house approx 12 years ago. I can't remember for certain, although I'm pretty sure I didn't carry on a subscription with NTL after this time (although I did later become a VM customer 5 years ago).

Could the account and emails still be accessible or have I lost them? (I can supply the email address and billing address etc). I really could do with getting a few files I now remember being stored there.

Many thanks,

Re: A long lost Ntlworld account

Welcome to the forum.

First point to make is that the Moderators do not generally reply to posts here.  Their role is to ensure the forum rules are not broken.

You could try checking whether your old email address is still active via an online email checker site such as this: http://verify-email.org/

Given the history you describe I would very much doubt that it is still active.  A Forum Team member will get to this post in a few days time and should be able to confirm the current status.

Re: A long lost Ntlworld account

Thank you Graham.

I wasn't aware of the hierarchy, I guess I meant Forum Team Member and not Mod! Smiley Very Happy

Looks like I've got little chance, that's a shame. I tried your link and this is what came back.

Re: A long lost Ntlworld account

@kosta - You might want to give it another try.

That log shows that the service didn't get as inspecting your email address properly.

> MAIL FROM: <check@verify-email.org>
=550 5.1.0 <check@verify-email.org> sender rejected (invalid domain)

For some reason, the sender address was rejected.  At this point execution of the script should have stopped but it carried on anyway.

> RCPT TO: <XXXXXXXX@ntlworld.com>
=503 5.5.0 need MAIL before RCPT

This wasn't rejected because of your email address failed, but because, at this point, the server did not have a valid sender address.

I'm not sure what's changed but I did try it myself, and it does seem to be working now.

Here's what you should see

MX record about ntlworld.com exists.
Connection succeeded to mx.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net SMTP.
220 mx2.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net bizsmtp ESMTP server ready

> HELO verify-email.org
250 mx2.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net hello [verify-email.org], pleased to meet you

> MAIL FROM: <check@verify-email.org>
=250 2.1.0 <check@verify-email.org> sender ok

> RCPT TO: <***********@ntlworld.com>
=550 5.1.1 <***********@ntlworld.com> recipient rejected (unknown mailbox)

Note that I deliberately used a fake email address for demonstration purposes, but you can clearly see the difference between your result and mine.

Tim

Re: A long lost Ntlworld account

Hi Tim, thanks for the reply. I've tried again and this is what I've got this time.

MX record about ntlworld.com exists.
Connection succeeded to mx.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net SMTP.
220 mx6.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net bizsmtp ESMTP server ready

> HELO verify-email.org
250 mx6.mnd.ukmail.iss.as9143.net hello [verify-email.org], pleased to meet you

> MAIL FROM: <check@verify-email.org>
=250 2.1.0 <check@verify-email.org> sender ok

> RCPT TO: <xxx@ntlworld.com>
=550 5.1.1 <xxx@ntlworld.com> recipient rejected (unknown mailbox)

To be honest, I'm not sure what to make of it!

Re: A long lost Ntlworld account

Based on that result it does indeed look as if your email address has been discontinued.

I note that you said you rejoined VM 5 years ago, however, unless you asked for the email address to be linked to that account it would have remained an orphan account, which would explain it's closure.  You mention having files you'd like to recover as well.  If these files were stored on ntlworld's webspace, they would be gone anyway as Virgin closed down webspace for all customers last year.

HTH

Tim
