networking

ok this could get complex :smileysurprised:)

i have a superhub located downstairs, connected to it are a sky hd box, bluray, nas drive and a cat5e cable running from the first lan port (closest to coax) which runs upstairs into a 5 port gigabit switch which has my cctv, laptop, second sky box, xbox and a spare port which i wanted to connect to my belkin N1 vision router for improved wifi over the superhubs terrible range, i just need to know how to configure the belkin? should i feed from my switch into the wan or lan? do i need to disable dhcp on any of the routers? would it be best to set the belkin to access point only mode? could i remove the 5 port switch and use the belkin to route my upstairs devices? sorry to waffle on but i hate networking & subnet bla bla bla

Yes, set the belkin to bridge mode. You can give it a new SSID or keep it the same as the rest of your network.

Super Hub to Belkin upstairs WAN port, Belkin set to bridge mode. Now the Belkin will work as a wireless acces point and a network switch. If you still want to use the switch you can.

Re: networking

Belkin should be in Access point mode. then use only the lan ports on the Belkin (not the WAN port)

Sorry my bad, the belkin will act as a switch in access point mode so plug the SH into a LAN port the WAN port will be disabled.

Google using belkin router as an access point, lots of help.

Re: networking

thanks guys, that works but disabling the wan port means that the display on the belkin is rendered usless,

the clock goes to jan 2000 and also the speed display will not work, which was one of the reasons i chose this router in the first place.

i tried disabling dhcp and giving the belkin a static ip of 192.168.0.22 and subnet 255.255.255.0 to match my Superhub and connecting it to the wan, using this method makes the display work ok but my cctv which is connected to the belkins lan is not accessible, grrr, i think i may just stick to access point only and forget about the neat little lcd screen unless some kind sole can help lol..

Re: networking

If you like the screen so much. Put the SH in modem mode then use the Belkin as the first device after the modem, then buy a dedicated wireless bridge for upstairs and plug it into the existing switch.,

Re: networking

Ahh good point, I do have port forwarding on the super hub to allow Internet access to the CCTV, I'll try opening port 99 on the belkin and see if it passes through then. If not I've lost nothing, thanks
