What does "We've got your back" mean?

What does "We've got your back" mean, since it doesn't make sense?

Don't you mean ..."We've got YOU back", surely?

Re: What does "We've got your back" mean?

It's a phrase that we often used in the police service - as Dave says it means we are supporting or helping to protect you, and was comforting to hear especially when dealing with a precarious incident where you were at risk of being attacked.

Hi Jonty.  The phrase 'We've got your back' means 'We are looking after you'.

Ok, many thanks for explaining.

I've never heard of that phrase and it seems that it has come from the US :-(

Re: What does "We've got your back" mean?

'We've got your back' is an Americanism thought to have come from old western movies, when the lawman always had someone watch his back to defend against back-shooters.

Re: What does "We've got your back" mean?

I see this silly "Strap Line" every month when VM email me my bill. It's very irritating and just jars when I see it. It means nothing and looks like a junior in the Marketing Dept can't spell and nobody ever checks customer communications for errors. Well VM you have not got me back, just my back up.

It's a phrase that was often used in old American westerns, which meant that the lawman had somebody watching out for back shooters when he went about his business.
