New VM cables

Noticed today,as I walked by, a VM contractor laying new fibre cables in New Barnet, North London. Interesting thing was that the fibre cables, all in a bunch together, were just being covered with ballast under the paving stones, no usual grey PVC 'pipes'.

Re: New VM cables

The Highway spec reserves Grey ducting for BT and Green ducting for VM, odd to see data cables not laid in ducts, unless the contractor is taking short cuts.

Unducted cables are usually surronded in dust or sand and should have a warning tape laid above. The warning tape should also be colour coded and have a description printed on it for example warning electric cables below, electric tape should be yellow, data green, water blue etc.

Re: New VM cables

We live in a cost cutting world ... short cuts and the motto "whatever we can get away with" are now the norm unfortunately.     Standards exist to be ignored.
