Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

I am trying to backup 615 MB of files.

The system backs up until it indicates 'Backed up files 87.7 MB used' then either says I have reached my free limit ( 5 gig?) or sometimes just keeps monitoring files. When I check the backed up files it confirmes that there are only 87.7 MB of files there and when I check the selected files it confirms that 615 MB files have been selected. I have reinstalled the backup software a few times and cleared all data to start again from zero but cannot get it to work effectively. Has anyone any suggestions what I sould noe do?

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

When you log into My Virgin Media and go to the Backup & Storage area how much does it say it in your Backup (and Storage) areas?

I wonder if there isn't lots of old stuff perhaps stuck there from aborted backup sets that is filling up your space?

Also, in the actual application on your PC how much does B&S say is selected for backup in the Select Files dialogue?

Hi Keith,

Thank you for your response. When I log into my Virgin Media and go to the Backup & Storage area  it says that I have used 5 gig of my Backup (and Storage). However when I go to see what is backed up there are two sets each of 0 bytes.

In my pc application there are 614 MB selected and it also now says that 'Backed up files are  are 0B used' where previously it said 87 MB! Also it is now always monitoring files!

Hi

Keith is the expert on here and I am sure he will be along to assist you. In the meantime could I suggest that you start afreash.  Check the items that you have been trying to back up, then when 'save' and 'clean' appear click on clean.  Then check to see if the files have been deleted. Then try again to backup just one small file so that it does not take a long time so you can check to see what is happening.

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

Thank your for your suggestion. I have therefore started afresh but was surprised when I checked the selected files to find that zero were selected. I am absolutely sure that I did not deselectnthem and perform clean, but that obviously accounts for the system only monitoring. I tried one file then another and it then worked ok. I then set the total to 20 files, about 25 MB and am waiting for the backup to finish, so I will keep you informed of the progress.

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

It did backup the 20 files totalling 27.9 MB but to be sure I have reset everything to zero again and performed a clean. then I set to back up some hundreds of MB and we will see what happens. Seems to be working ok so far but see what happens when it reaches 87.7MB. Again many thanks for your support, I will keep you informed of developments.

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

The same problem has now appeared. At 83 MB I received the message saying that I am at 100% of my backup limit and that I need to upgrade. I ignored the popup message and the backup continued to  87.6 MB where it has stopped and now seems to be stuck on initialising.

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

Well, firstly thanks to RonB for the kind words! :smileyembarrassed:  And his advice was spot-on too!

This is certainly a weird one - if the online page says you have 5GB used but there's only two backup sets and they're both 0bytes!  I imagine the 87MB is just the small remaining overhead before it hits exactly 5GB, because the value is rounded up a bit.

The other thing I'm wondering is if you have any files in the Storage section (as opposed to Backup)? i.e. when you look at the info page that shows the space used (like my version below) what does it say?

Re: Cannot backup more than 87.7 MB

Hi Keith

Unfortunately I cannot seem to find how to copy graphics into the message box. The help section refers to the 'tree' button but I cannot see that in the edit bar. However my 5 gig usage bar graph is in blue indicating that this is in storage but I cannot find what this is refering to. In addition it is not set out with any detailed figures for backup and storeage like your is, am I missing this window?.

I did delete previous backups with the old software and then installed the latest version so may be the memory has not been reset for my use even though the backups have been deleted?

Many thanks for your excellent support.

Regards

John

John,

Ok, I think we may be getting close to the issue then - it sounds like your space may be used up by Storage files rather than Backup files.

To get to see the graphic like above do the following:

  • Log into My Virgin Media (there's a link at the top-right of this page if you need it).
  • After logging in, half-way down the page there is a "My Apps" section (under "My Bills" & "My Package").
  • In the My Apps section click on "Backup & Storage".
  • You should now see a graphic like above.

If this does indeed show about 5GB in Storage (blue) and hardly any in Backup (green) then that is why there's no space left (or only 87MB left) for Backup.

  • Further down that page there is a red button entitled "Access you files" - click this.
  • Then click on the "Storage Files" tab (rather than the "Backed up files" tab).
  • You then should be able to see a folder structure with your Storage files.
  • If you want to make room for your backup you then need top choose to delete some stuff out of Storage.
  • You can delete files from Storage by going into the relevant top-level folders and putting tick next to those files you want to delete and then clicking the red arrow ( Arrow.jpg ) next to them and selecting "delete" from the drop-down list.

Of course, if you don't want to delete files from Storage (because you still want them in there for some reason) then I'm afraid you're stuck at your current limit of 5GB unless you want to pay our more to VM.

Good luck,

Keith
